Don't be so sarcastic! In my case the problem did NOT appear after the last windows update which went through perfectly well. I'd been doing a lot of work uninstalling programs, deleting files, defragging etc and don't know what precipitated this crash, but it wasn't the last update on its own...

Tip from rank amateur I had to try this a couple of times. When you select a Restore Point pick one before the last Windows Update - one of the "scheduled" ones. What idiot invented Vista!!!!
