Try setting the duration to -1. If that doesn't work then use what I describe below.
Use channel ability as the base ability then create a trigger similar to this:

Events
Unit - A unit Starts the effect of an ability
Conditions
(Ability being cast) Equal to...
Hold shift key then double click the data field of your choice. After the data field opens, release the shift key and you should be able to input negative values.

I was pretty interested in the contest when I saw the shoutout in THW, but I was disappointed when I read that it's supposed to be sent by email and have to be in a .docx.. I think that's pretty inconvenient. Is there no other way we could submit our heroes within the site?
You can try using arrow key movement systems and change the events to what suits your situation. :)

Hmm let's just say I want to make a spell that when cast, all enemy unit within XXX AoE will be damaged..
Which would be better to use? pick every unit in area then damage individually or damage circular area? and why?
