I deem it controversial because there is a brewing debate within the issue discussion, and it actually splintered the open-source community a little bit, such as circlejerking over the crybabies and so on.
I liked the Contributions Statistics myself, because I can self-impose myself with metrics available. Since it is gone, it is sad, but what can we do?
I do think it would be better if there are options to opt-out of this blanket ruling, so only those who wanted the metrics can view them in private.
