The cause of an explosion at a U.S. military facility in Japan is under investigation and initial reports indicate no personnel were injured.
The base is located in Sagamihara, a city in the Japanese prefecture of Kanagawa, which borders Tokyo.
"There are no indications of injuries," Pentagon spokesman U.S. Navy Commander Bill Urban said in a statement. "The army appreciates the quick reaction and support of our partners from the Sagamihara City emergency services."
The explosion occurred just after midnight Japan time at a building on the U.S. Army's Sagami Depot, which is about 25 miles southwest of Tokyo.
"The storage building is not designated as a hazardous material storage facility, as some initial reports indicated," Urban said in the statement. "We are in the process of determining the exact contents of the building. The Sagami General Depot does not store ammunition or radiological materials."
