Request: A list of Windows recommended applications/software in the General Tech Help

Can we have a stickied thread with the list of recommended applications for Windows? And maybe Mac too?

Searching for the programs recommended by others seems to be a bit tiring if all of them are not in one spot for users to find and download (if it's freeware/GPL/GNU). Since the community are full of tech whizzes, I'm sure they are helpful to give new users of computers some good advices and programs for them to catch up.

Just hoping for a reply. Thanks in advance.
