It took Dubai more than five years to build the 828-meter Burj Khalifa, the world’s tallest building (for the moment, anyway).

But Chinese architects and engineers reckon they need a mere 90 days to leave the Emiratis in the dust.
At least, that's what they've claimed.

Broad Sustainable Building (BSB), a construction company based in Hunan, is planning to erect an 838-meter building called Sky City (天空城市)later this year in Changsha, the provincial capital of Hunan Province.

Projected cost for the building is RMB 4 billion (US$628 million). Once completed, the 220-story structure will surpass Burj Khalifa to become the tallest structure in the world.

This is a bad idea, especially from the Chinese who aren't known for the best quality products. But alas, if they pull it off, I'll gladly print out this page and literally eat my own words.

Right, good luck with that. Sounds like a completely safe and good idea.

Why do they want to build those things anyway?
Either they don't know what to do with their money Or they Just wanna push other families off the land for another skyscraper.

Seriously, I rather look at a 100ft tree on the side of a 2-3 story building. Than a freaking skyscraper in every direction.

The population for those buildings is already there, if you watch that documentary i posted, the problem is, that the majority of the population is way too poor to afford all those buildings.
There are millions of apartments staying empty and millions of people without a "real" home but they dont have the money to afford those apartments.

In the same documentary they show the worlds biggest shopping maul, also in china, which has enough space to hold 15000 shops but only about 3 shops have opened in the mall this far. It is just not being used because there is no need for it.

I can see this building ending the same way.

Because they don't need it yet... obviously or else it would be used more often. They're just planning for the future; the USSR did the same thing.

You do know that all those millions of unoccupied buildings still need to be maintained. It costs them so much money every day to keep them clean, to repair or to supply those apartments.

It costs us a lot to keep marijuana dealers in prison too. But we do shit that don't make sense too, now don't we? As such this is most likely done by a private firm, not China itself. As most everything else is anyway.

Yeah, but now the USSR is gone. I wouldn't take a lesson out of that book.

What, planning ahead? You're all wondering why China's building cities and don't wonder why we build acres of nothing but houses that no one lives in right now? It's the exact same thing only on larger scales.

Random Update on some old news - a grand idea this Chinese Sky City but now it is a fish farm or something...

Sky City: The Skyscraper China Tried (and Failed) to Build in 90 Days

The Empire State Building? At 443 meters tall, it took over a year to build. Burj Khalifa in Dubai, currently the world’s tallest building? At 828 meters tall, it took nearly six years to build.

With Sky City, or tiānkōng chéngshì in Mandarin, Chinese construction company Broad Sustainable Building, a subsidiary of Broad Group, wanted to set a new record. Located in Changsha in China’s Hunan Province and measuring 838 meters tall, or 2,749 feet, the proposed skyscraper would not only have earned the title of world’s tallest, but they said they’d build it in just 90 days.

If that seems impossible, you wouldn’t be the first to say so. In fact, you’d be in agreement with a number of internationally renowned structural engineers and architects. Unfortunately, we may never know because as of 2016, construction of Sky City has been postponed indefinitely. Nevertheless, Broad Sustainable Building insists their plans are not only doable, but that they’ll go through with them sooner or later.

When most people think of prefabricated buildings, they imagine Oklahoma trailer parks filled with vinyl-sided single-family homes that inevitably get sucked up by a tornado. However, with Sky City, Broad Sustainable Building wanted to take the same principles and use them to construct a massive tower at the unprecedented speed of five floors per day.

Crazy how much 3d printing has come in the last few years. Sad that it's not as easily modifiable though
  • Varine Varine:
I bought an Ender 3 during the pandemic and tinkered with it all the time. Just bought a Sovol, not as easy. I'm trying to make it use a different nozzle because I have a fuck ton of Volcanos, and they use what is basically a modified volcano that is just a smidge longer, and almost every part on this thing needs to be redone to make it work
  • Varine Varine:
Luckily I have a 3d printer for that, I guess. But it's ridiculous. The regular volcanos are 21mm, these Sovol versions are about 23.5mm
  • Varine Varine:
So, 2.5mm longer. But the thing that measures the bed is about 1.5mm above the nozzle, so if I swap it with a volcano then I'm 1mm behind it. So cool, new bracket to swap that, but THEN the fan shroud to direct air at the part is ALSO going to be .5mm to low, and so I need to redo that, but by doing that it is a little bit off where it should be blowing and it's throwing it at the heating block instead of the part, and fuck man
  • Varine Varine:
I didn't realize they designed this entire thing to NOT be modded. I would have just got a fucking Bambu if I knew that, the whole point was I could fuck with this. And no one else makes shit for Sovol so I have to go through them, and they have... interesting pricing models. So I have a new extruder altogether that I'm taking apart and going to just design a whole new one to use my nozzles. Dumb design.
  • Varine Varine:
Can't just buy a new heatblock, you need to get a whole hotend - so block, heater cartridge, thermistor, heatbreak, and nozzle. And they put this fucking paste in there so I can't take the thermistor or cartridge out with any ease, that's 30 dollars. Or you can get the whole extrudor with the direct driver AND that heatblock for like 50, but you still can't get any of it to come apart
  • Varine Varine:
Partsbuilt has individual parts I found but they're expensive. I think I can get bits swapped around and make this work with generic shit though
