Warcraft 3 & FT: 'Unable to initialize base sound services...'

Hey all,

So I got past the Fatal Error problem by running a repair with my Windows XP disk. But now, when I start up either Warcraft 3 or Frozen Throne, I get this error message:

'Unable to initialize base sound services, sound is disabled.' :banghead:

The game runs fine, but with no sound. I went into Options -> Sound and checked everything, made sure the volume was up, etc. It had a little drop down menu entitled Sound Device. The options it gave me were:

Dolby Surround
Miles Emulated 3D
Creative Labs EAX2 (tm)

When I tried to select one of them, it gave me the same error message. I have an onboard soundcard. An NVIDIA nForce onboard audio card.
It's funny because every other program I've tried, works. EVE Online, The Movies, Pirates!, etc. The sound works fine except for Warcraft. And what's even wierder is that I started a new campaign in Warcraft 3, and the music and sound for the intro movie was fine. But when I acutally got into the game, it was gone.

Any suggestions? Any help would be most appriciated!

Updated = Wednesday, April 13, 2005 12:34 PM - i would update this sound driver if there is a newer one.

So here's what i'd do in order, keep trying the next one if the previous did not work.

1. Update the sound card, http://www.nvidia.com/content/drivers/drivers.asp
-you want the platform/nvidia > nforce audio driver > Windows XP
2. Reinstall war3
3. Follow these steps: http://www.blizzard.com/support/?id=awr01656p

Good job on posting the specs, wish everyone would do this!

First off, thank you for your support and help.
Secondly, that's the first thing to come to mind when I got that error message was to update my sound drivers, so I did, but to no avail. I also saw already, that posting on the Blizzard web-site that you posted. And I've check all those settings, but alas, still will not work.
Any other suggestions? Was just thinking of uninstalling and reinstalling WC3 but I don't even know if that will fix anything.
So, any other help would be greatly appriciated. Comments, suggestions, help of any kind? :banghead:
Thanks again!

I know this is kind of a buried post but I just wanted to reply and tell everybody that I DID end up having to reinstall the whole game for the sound to work. So if anybody else has this problem, that was my only solution.
Thanks for all the help guys!
