why don't you start with telling us why this IS an issue. there isn't much to argue against as of now.

your principles? what principles? and you can't compare a company tracking your phone with a company putting cameras in your house.

It's an invasion of our privacy for the sole purpose of them making money. If there were a more benign purpose behind it then it might be alright, but I don't like them doing it to try to weasel more money out of me.

but most people really don't care. so for most people, there really is no problem. what you do and do not like is obviously not representative of.. well, anyone but you. and by the way, you didn't even have a smartphone, right? so you have a problem with other people not having a problem with something that does not concern you?

My third post already reveals why this IS an issue. If you allow this then you face something more invasive in the future. You have to draw the line somewhere or else it will snowball uncontrollably to the point where you can't do anything about it.
If this it not a valid argument to why surveillance has to be kept in check I don't know what is.

So demount your horse and tell us why monitoring our every move is acceptable.

your principles? what principles? and you can't compare a company tracking your phone with a company putting cameras in your house.

What principles? Really?
How about: why do I have to, against my will, be traced whenever I go somewhere. Who is entitled to watch my every step?
If it was a choice then fine. But I don't have a choice. Some company is just tracking me without my say on the matter. How can you accept that?

Furthermore.
The company which tracks my phone could just as well be a company that set up cameras in my home.
The latter is simply a possibility, not a given, if you keep allowing companies (or the government for that matter) to look over your shoulder no matter what you do.
Again, how can you accept that?

You asked for a reason why it's an issue and I gave you one. I didn't say I had a problem with your views, I was just explaining mine. Don't be dumb.

They're not near the line yet.

That's highly speculative, and you have no evidence which suggests it.

So demount your horse and tell us why monitoring our every move is acceptable.

It's acceptable because it has no real effect on our lives. Unless you get all paranoid.

just leave your phone at home. get one that doesn't broadcast your location.

now you're getting speculative again. obviously people are okay with someone (most of the time, no specific person) tracking their movement, since, well, people are still using smartphones and aren't making a fuzz. but how can you seriously think the general population would be ok with cameras in their private homes?

but the only "issue" you could present was their greedy purposes. so, in absence of any other arguments, I guess you'd concede that the real effects on one's life are minimal to none?

Well, there's always the issue that someone might intercept the tracked information and use it to impersonate you. Isn't that why we're suggested to turn off automatic location broadcasting on Facebook etc.? (Evidently it's not enough, but still.)

I'd say moderate to none, depending on the person. I don't like people I don't know knowing about the things I do, where I go and what I like, and then using that information to take advantage of me. The resultant fiscal and psychological impact could be significant at times to some people. For me, it'd be fairly minimal, but it does bother me a bit every time I think about it, probably why I feel like I need to explain how I feel about it.

That's your opinion.
Personally I think they are already way over the line.

No point arguing about opinions, then ;)

Also, if I could profit from tracking because I had the capital and hardware and whatnot, I would. So, I can understand where these guys are coming from.

Totally. I'm not saying they're bad people because it's the same thing that almost anyone else would do in this day and age given the opportunity. I just wouldn't want to be the target of it, I don't like the sound of it.

Necromancy power activated - this is still an issue and is not discussed enough in mainstream media. Facebook recently turned off its location tracking parts of Facebook as it was starting to get people thinking about what the hell is my phone actually tracking on me. Location is definitely it especially on any Android phone.

Hmm, how do I change my signature?
  • tom_mai78101 tom_mai78101:
Signatures can be edit in your account profile. As for the old stuffs, I'm thinking it's because Blizzard is now under Microsoft, and because of Microsoft Xbox going the way it is, it's dreadful.

@tom_mai78101 I must be blind. If I go on my profile I don't see any area to edit the signature; If I go to account details (settings) I don't see any signature area either.

You can get there if you click the bell icon (alerts) and choose preferences from the bottom, signature will be in the menu on the left there https://www.thehelper.net/account/preferences

Crazy how much 3d printing has come in the last few years. Sad that it's not as easily modifiable though
  • Varine Varine:
I bought an Ender 3 during the pandemic and tinkered with it all the time. Just bought a Sovol, not as easy. I'm trying to make it use a different nozzle because I have a fuck ton of Volcanos, and they use what is basically a modified volcano that is just a smidge longer, and almost every part on this thing needs to be redone to make it work
  • Varine Varine:
Luckily I have a 3d printer for that, I guess. But it's ridiculous. The regular volcanos are 21mm, these Sovol versions are about 23.5mm
  • Varine Varine:
So, 2.5mm longer. But the thing that measures the bed is about 1.5mm above the nozzle, so if I swap it with a volcano then I'm 1mm behind it. So cool, new bracket to swap that, but THEN the fan shroud to direct air at the part is ALSO going to be .5mm to low, and so I need to redo that, but by doing that it is a little bit off where it should be blowing and it's throwing it at the heating block instead of the part, and fuck man
  • Varine Varine:
I didn't realize they designed this entire thing to NOT be modded. I would have just got a fucking Bambu if I knew that, the whole point was I could fuck with this. And no one else makes shit for Sovol so I have to go through them, and they have... interesting pricing models. So I have a new extruder altogether that I'm taking apart and going to just design a whole new one to use my nozzles. Dumb design.
  • Varine Varine:
Can't just buy a new heatblock, you need to get a whole hotend - so block, heater cartridge, thermistor, heatbreak, and nozzle. And they put this fucking paste in there so I can't take the thermistor or cartridge out with any ease, that's 30 dollars. Or you can get the whole extrudor with the direct driver AND that heatblock for like 50, but you still can't get any of it to come apart
  • Varine Varine:
Partsbuilt has individual parts I found but they're expensive. I think I can get bits swapped around and make this work with generic shit though
