SC2 will not provide LAN

According to Kotaku, Starcraft 2 or future Blizzard games will not provide LAN, instead the upraged Battle.Net system should replace it.

To me this is very bad news :/ No more playnights with friends.

Comments, feedback etc.

What do you mean? You can still play with your friends, just on b.net.

I honestly don't see the problem with removing LAN, I liked\used it but its not that big of a problem just to use b.net instead.

my internet is 20mb/s, while my lan i 1Gb/s, I think that I will preffer to play my games on lan with lower risk of latency:p

And also, I preffer to play lan beacuse of all the annoying little kids that calls you a retard as soon as you get a high ping or do something that they think is wrong;)

Over here, it's counted as 'kilobytes'. Blizzard will lose a lot of potential customers from Asian countries if this is true. (Although, I have to admit that they don't really get much profit from Asian countries due to piracy :p).

You don't have to play with those types of people any more then you do on LAN. :p I didn't think of slow internet, as thats not what I've heard most people complain of. Maybe blizzard will make changes to b.net to help that, idk.

Taking away LAN would be horrible. I always play LAN with friends, I have 3 computers set up in one room just for that. My internet cuts out alot, which means time to play LAN

My internet upload speed fails horribly - now if I want to play with someone else in my house, I guess that I won't be able to play Starcraft II. Blizzard really messed up on this one. I'm seriously considering not buying the game now. I use LAN quite a bit for games.

Reading the comments on the site, I did stumble upon this comment;
It's going to be replaced by an offline Battle.net feature that they can't yet talk about. Read the original article and you'll see two developers wanted to talk about it but Rob Pardo stepped in and just said that a "LAN feature" didn't exist, clarifying later that it will be replaced by a Battle.net feature they can't talk about.

There will be LAN play, it will just be under a different name. Now stop freaking out over this!

I do agree, that its highly likely they will have something else to replace it with the same features.

I never did LAN for Wc3, when I still played it, so it really doesn't effect me

It's funny how you guys are pissed off at some feature and dislike Blizzard for it. Well, TOUGH SHIT.

Blizzard can do whatever the fuck they want now. Why? They have enough money, and enough people are going to buy the game regardless of the shit they do. Boycotts only work if you actually harm the company you're trying to fuck with. Saying you won't buy it is a futile attempt toward a noble cause.

Blizzard's reason for this is very simplistic. They don't want their game to be like Demigod or something where >80% of the people possessing the game had pirated it. Without LAN, it's exceedingly difficult to play online with a pirated copy. In fact, it's the only truly effective method beyond having the CD-Key method Blizzard uses. It forces pirates to use custom servers, which may or may not be possible in SC2, and will certainly be very rough and laggy.

Who can blame them for this? It may seem trivial to you guys who think "they wouldn't get the money anyway" but to me, and to game developers, it's insulting and can really hurt profits if so many people acquire the game for free. Stardock tried the "lol no DRM = people want to buy it" and it worked for a couple games, but it bit them in the ass, HARD, with Demigod, as the effect of pirating had lasting effects on virtually all the major review sites who would say "fucking multiplayer game has laggy multiplayer," when in fact it was due to 100,000 pirates (or pirate connections, could be a DDoS) trying to connect to the server over the span of several days, when only about 10,000 legal buyers were connected (the servers were equipped to handles a peak 50,000).

Blizzard better damn well have a similar service in battle.net, though, or they're just stupid. I don't want to buy eight copies of the game (holy damn that's $400, i could by a new motherboard, processor, and some RAM with that money) just so my family and friends could have a quick romp-stomp match. They're stupid because imagine all the cybercafe's and such who would be pissed off at this, and would seek to pressure Blizzard into getting it changed.

Seems they are aiming World of Warcraft community, it could be their target market. So far on-line gaming has showed its potential. I bet they did before background scan how many their customers have Internet access.

Only reason why they did this is to avoid piracy at all costs, I imagine new LAN requires first authentication from Battle.net 2.0.

So, no internet connection = no game.

Somebody wanna bet how long time it takes for a pirated version of the game that allows playing without internet connection to be released?
I bought a laptop that will be able to play sc2 so that I can play with a friend on the train (no internet) so this suxs big time...

If Blizzard actually ignores the fans and they don't include a LAN option called otherwise (as in, the game requires Internet Connection for multi-player), not very long. This choice would increase piracy, not decrease it...
