A friend of mine watched it and used it to pick up chicks.

I loled.
However many of the girls at my school to are obessed with this. I never wanted to read the books, they are too girly, fake, and I dont have enough patience. I watched the first movie, didn't like it at all. No one does it seems like, except the obessed girls at my school :p But I have no room to judge the books seeing as I never read them, many of you dont either, as you havent read them also. However I wont be reading the books any time soon, nor ever.

I listened to the twilight audio books, and I am currently on the third. I can understand what makes people like it so much, however I have never been taken in by the story. I am merely listening to it to see what the big fuss is. I have to say that Twilight is poorly written, and the only reason why it is so widespread, is the fan girl aspect of it, like Ninva said, Bella is so generic and easily relate-able to every teenage girl who reads it. The complete disregard for vampire and werewolf lore, leaves distaste in my mouth. Its one thing to redefine lore and make it your own, its another to completely reshape it. I think the way Stephanie Meyer went about it poorly. Merely stating that all of the tales about vampires were myths. To even begin to make such a change in classic lore, should take careful planning and cleverness. However in my opinion Twilight exudes none of this.

I have read plenty of books that redefines classic lore. Such as the mortal instruments, which depicts vampires and werewolf as down worlders which are part demon humanoids living in an unseen world around the humans.

Another series: The Inheritance Cycle: which includes the more reconizable: Eragon Redefines dragons as majestic creatures who are bound to a rider with powerful magic. The story also creates a magical world with a set of strict rules on casting magic, and its limits.

The point that I am trying to make is: It is possible to change and tweak lore, and the above are successful examples. But Twilight completely destroyed the spirit of Vampires, replacing every fact about vampires with a poorly written excuse. The whole sparkling in light for instance is poorly explained, and seems to just be glitter for female readers. Twilight could be an excellent book if it was not written for fans, and just written for the writer herself. With excellent writing skill, Twilight could be pulled off with an excellent and believable plot. To say the least, so far with Twilight I am not impressed, and I'm a bit irked with the popularity of it, when there are so many other good series that are unknown.
