A top Italian food writer has been suspended indefinitely from the country’s version of the television programme Ready Steady Cook for recommending stewed cat to viewers as a “succulent dish”.

RAI, the public broadcasting network, said that it had dropped Beppe Bigazzi, 77, for offering the recipe on La Prova del Cuoco, which is broadcast at midday on the main channel. Its switchboard was inundated with complaints from viewers and animal rights groups. Bigazzi said that casserole of cat was a famous dish in his home region of Valdarno, Tuscany.

“I’ve eaten it myself and it’s a lot better than many other animals,” he told viewers. “Better than chicken, rabbit or pigeon.” He said that for optimum flavour the meat should be “soaked in spring water for three days” before being stewed.

Hmm. Put them in a situation where they have to eat cat or die, and they'll eat it...

I'm a cat lover, I would find it very hard to try and eat something like that. Practically any other animal is fair game though :p

Also, this was the Italian version of the show, it's got very little to do with UK News other than it was posted on a UK news site ;)

I don't get it. If a chicken can be eaten without animal rights bothering em, why is a cat something the animal rights would start complaining about?

Seriously? If their watching the cooking channel and he is cookin steak its all "Mmhmm, zesty." But as soon as he mentions cooking an animal that some countries consider a house pet now were suddenly interested.

"Help the dolphin in the tuna net!"
"What about the TUNA IN THE TUNA NET?"

Typical situation.

They are domesticated. That's pretty much it. Humans and anything humans feel attached to deserve a larger chance at life than these other worthless animals. (Not my viewpoints)

So whats wrong if it was? Maybe it would not be a problems neither?!. Well, would it be delicious thought or not?

The difference is quite obvious, since ethically speaking eating a human is outrageously wrong, we actually coined a term for it, cannibalism. Plus, as long as the Cat is bred to be eaten i don't see anything wrong with it, just like the Turkeys bred to be eaten are so stupid they can drown when it rains because they stare upwards at it, but a wild turkey is quite intelligent. So ya, your point makes no sense. The only reason to say eating something is utterly wrong is when that thing is quite intelligent, and/or a member of the same species...

This is so ridiculous... I honestly cannot understand the mindset of some people. I love animals, i've owned both pet dogs and cats.... And to be quite honest I wouldn't have a problem eating a dish that has cat or dog in it. It's another kind of meat, just because the animal can be domesticated and loved as a pet doesn't mean (as someone else said) it somehow is more important then other animals. I mean if me and a bunch of my friends all loved cows to some insane point, and we started lobbying against everyone who eats beef out there, claiming it's animal cruelty i'm sure everyone would tell us to f*** off.

Koreans eat anything with 4 legs. They are not afraid to tell you that if you ask them either. Different countries different cultures. Dont think dog or cat dishes would go over to well in the US though since we have them as pets but in some countries you eat what you can catch.

No is not!
Seriously, that shit's hella disturbin. Its seriously the most fucked up
thing to make a stewed food from a house pet.
Btw: Ive said it before and ill say it again. Pets are not a meat. It never be!

it's not the pet from someone's house, it's the stray that was going to be "put down" anyways, or raised to be killed and eaten - just like so many other animals

My exact feelings.

If it's raised as a "food source", so be it! Cows and raised as "beef", we eat them, who cares? How is raising a cat for food any different? It's not! It's because some countries think cats are "pets". If they're not raised as "pets", they're not pets. Some people have cows as "pets", but we still eat them...

House pet: a pet that you have AT YOUR HOUSE! If they're raised to eat, what makes them any different than a cow thats raised to eat here in America? I love cats, and I love dogs, but I would personally try them given the chance. Why? Because raising them to eat is no different than raising cows to eat like said above...

I wish every human in the world had a similar mindset so we can cry less about trivial occurrences.
