A Sacramento woman says a tech support engineer in India managed to expose her secrets and make charges to her credit card after she called him with a desperate request.

There's no getting around the fact that Tara Fitzgerald was faced with an embarrassing situation and a 14-year-old daughter in the house.

"I was missing pictures on my computer. And they were personal pictures and I didn't feel comfortable," said Fitzgerald.

They were extremely personal pictures intended only for her boyfriend.
"I couldn't find them on my computer and that made me nervous," said Fitzgerald.

So she called Dell support for help with her new Dell computer and delicate problem. She was connected to a Dell support contractor in Mumbai, India named Riyaz Shaikh.

"I trusted him. I trusted him because he was a Dell technician and I don't like the cyberworld, you're so vulnerable," said Fitzgerald.

She gave the technician permission to access her computer remotely and watched as he found the pictures and downloaded them.

"Oh yeah, I'm totally convinced. I watched him take the pictures out of my e-mail. I watched him," said Fitzgerald.

This is why I NEVER let anyone touch my computer unless I'm sitting there with the ability to instantly lock them out (TeamViewer).

Agreed. Maybe before you let them touch your comp, maybe you should've moved them off your comp or something? Oh, too stupid to do so?

thats what exactly i was going to say, stupid ppl need to learn to use their computers more, and then stuff like this cant happen.

Exactly. You wouldn't buy a car if you're not planning on learning to drive it. So why buy a computer if you're not planning on learning how to use it properly?

Then again most people don't know how to fix their own cars either...but that's their own fault again.

I don't see this as an acceptable answer.. your not going to be able to learn how everything that you use works after a certain point (possibly in the future once technology is even more advanced and complicated), you may be able to muddle through it, but sometimes messing with stuff you don't understand just because you read it on google isn't a good idea..

that said, I don't get why people even take naked pictures of themselves and leave them in a digital format.. if they only wanted their boyfriend to see it, then just show the boyfriend what he wants to see and move on, no need for physical pictures

I've seen a guy's gay porn collection while at work (I'm an IT guy myself) ... he was in some of his own shots ... :( I'm deeply scarred.

To prevent tech support from downloading pictures of yourself nude?

Her bf could have posted them online too.

Nude photos on a computer that is connected to the internet deserves no sympathy. The benefits of poor thought as demonstrated here are going to be cultivated.

Everyone makes a mistake. So she likes intercourse and exposing herself to her boyfriend. It doesn't mean she deserves this. Furthermore, it was Dell, a famous world wide computer manufacturer, that she called. Considering there are hackers who expose nude pictures working for that company shows how corrupt and indifferent the large companies can be.

Did anyone read the article? The man didn't hack her computer. He was given remote access to it to help her find her photos that she didn't want her 14-year old daughter to find.

This example is in no way showing how corrupt large companies can be. This shows that humans in their own right are self centered and only search for their personal gain.

Well this is still Dell's fault for trusting foreigners to examine people's computer and solve problems based on any information they choose to ask. If anything happens, Dell can't catch the culprit, making their only choice to compensate or use all their power to disclaim the people's charges. In this case, it could be the latter. Pretty corrupt in my opinion

Most Dell employee representatives are from India. Trust me. I contacted Dell about my old PC 6 times and they all had indian names (plus it said contacted from india).

because dell can make sure they hire only people with amazing moral standards?!? You can't know some things about a person... people make mistakes. until they are outsourcing to robots, they are not directly responsible for what happened; however, are responsible for correcting the problem at hand (through means of compensation for her and termination for him).

How can you tell the difference between real traffic and indexing or AI generation bots?
  • The Helper The Helper:
The bots will show up as users online in the forum software but they do not show up in my stats tracking. I am sure there are bots in the stats but the way alot of the bots treat the site do not show up on the stats
  • Varine Varine:
I want to build a filtration system for my 3d printer, and that shit is so much more complicated than I thought it would be
  • Varine Varine:
Apparently ABS emits styrene particulates which can be like .2 micrometers, which idk if the VOC detectors I have can even catch that
  • Varine Varine:
Anyway I need to get some of those sensors and two air pressure sensors installed before an after the filters, which I need to figure out how to calculate the necessary pressure for and I have yet to find anything that tells me how to actually do that, just the cfm ratings
  • Varine Varine:
And then I have to set up an arduino board to read those sensors, which I also don't know very much about but I have a whole bunch of crash course things for that
  • Varine Varine:
These sensors are also a lot more than I thought they would be. Like 5 to 10 each, idk why but I assumed they would be like 2 dollars
  • Varine Varine:
Another issue I'm learning is that a lot of the air quality sensors don't work at very high ambient temperatures. I'm planning on heating this enclosure to like 60C or so, and that's the upper limit of their functionality
  • Varine Varine:
Although I don't know if I need to actually actively heat it or just let the plate and hotend bring the ambient temp to whatever it will, but even then I need to figure out an exfiltration for hot air. I think I kind of know what to do but it's still fucking confusing
  • The Helper The Helper:
Maybe you could find some of that information from AC tech - like how they detect freon and such
  • Varine Varine:
That's mostly what I've been looking at
  • Varine Varine:
I don't think I'm dealing with quite the same pressures though, at the very least its a significantly smaller system. For the time being I'm just going to put together a quick scrubby box though and hope it works good enough to not make my house toxic
  • Varine Varine:
I mean I don't use this enough to pose any significant danger I don't think, but I would still rather not be throwing styrene all over the air

I bitch about Xenforo sometimes but it really is full featured you just have to really know what you are doing to get the most out of it.
  • The Helper The Helper:
It is just not easy to fix styles and customize but it definitely can be done
  • The Helper The Helper:
I do know this - xenforo dropped the ball by not keeping the vbulletin reputation comments as a feature. The loss of the Reputation comments data when we switched to Xenforo really was the death knell for the site when it came to all the users that left. I know I missed it so much and I got way less interested in the site when that feature was gone and I run the site.
