No one joining public published map

I publicly published my map and made a game, but in an hour now, not even a single person has joined my game. Am I doing something wrong? How do I get people to join my game? I've heard it has to do with popularity, but how does my map become popular if no one plays it?

It doesn't. That's the problem.

There has been a poll with 97% of the people being against the system, so I guess they gotta change it some time... Best you can do is upload it and hope people play it with friends. Or post at forum to find people who wanna play with you.

You know that explains a lot on why the same maps always seem to be up there and I never see any new ones.

Why isn't there a "View new maps" option? Wouldn't that solve this?

Does anyone really understand how popularity works? For instance, if I play it a lot with friends does it require different friends, or just that we play it a lot?

Every time a map is hosted (starts) the bar gets +1. However, it only stores it for the past hour. So within 1 hour you'll have to start it about 5000 times to get in the top games and then people have to keep playing it that much to actually make it stay that high (as it only stores the last hour). That's how I see it...

Ouch that hurts, looks like someone here needs to by 5000 copies of sc so they can program a micro to start a game every hourXD I wouldn't mind the poplular thing so much if there was a sperate tab to see hosted games as well, so that when someone host thier own game it would appear there(as long as multiple games of the same map stay in its own bar and just say how many lobbies their are otherwise it would be flooded with the same maps)

They should have an option to view maps much like you could in WC3. I can see the usefulness of the Popularity, but removing the ability to see any other maps with any efficiency is just plain stupid. I seriously hope they give this an overhaul soon, or the mapping community will not be as creative and wide as it was in WC3.

A very sensible solution.

While it is apparent the problem that this new system has... It is also true of how awesomely easy the system makes it to start up one of the better games and play instantly... So I'm not going to hate on it just yet. Map makers have to try a little harder? well that's ok too because most map makers post very badly made maps anyways. the public will find the good ones if they exist.

Well what I don't get is some of the current "popular" maps are terrible! There is this one open RPG which is basically nothing but open terrain, and the ability create whatever unit you want, where ever you want. I can't imagine that being a very fun game for "most" people. I think people join it thinking it's an RPG (like I did), only to find it's nothing of the sort and quitting. But of course because they joined they bumped the popularity up.

The concept here is like the rich get richer and the poor get poorer. How are less popular maps expected to make it to the "top ranks" if they aren't even advertised?

I saw this suggestion mentioned before, but something like a "new maps" would be a great addition. And at the very least the WC3 style of creating new games.

I suggest you create your map with the sole idea that you will only play it with your closest and dearest friends. With the current system, only (10?) maps will make it. As you said, rich will get richer.
