Your Internet Habits

Hey guys,

I'm having an oral English exam on Tuesday, and my selected subject is "Identity on the Internet". I to do some research before the exam, and I'd like to know a few things about your internet habits.

For example, why did you first stumble upon (insert internet community here - thehelper, 4chan, whatever)? What led you to it?
Are you yourself on the internet? Are you trying to be someone else?
Do you use online fora as an escape route from the daily struggles or other bothersome affairs?
Etc. - you can come up with anything you would like to say, I'm interested in it all!

Thanks!

  • -back during my first join date, I had played a Diablo map that could have been so much better, and decided to try my hand at making it so - I was a freshman in college at the time. I first joined wc3campaigns.net, but it was hard to get anything out of anyone, even back then. wc3sear.ch was also a good resource at the time
  • -I am totally myself here, and everywhere else on the net. no point in being anyone else
  • -no, not really, just as a way to pass the time really, and to research that which peaks my interests (sports, weight lifting, etc.), for instance I received a Pandigital Novel for a Christmas present, and of course the first thing I did was hack into it and make it a pull pledge Android Tablet (with slow hardware that is).
  • -other forums I got into (thats all i really do on the net, aside from movie reviews and torrenting and sports for the most part) was Camaro forums (I got a Camaro about the same time as I joined here) and now BMW forums (me and my now wife got a BMW back in '07)

maybe not quite what you were looking for, but I hope it helps - in a nutshell - my identity in RL is the same as my identity on the net, why would someone want to be something they are not?

I used Google to look for World Editor Tutorials.

I'm myself the way I am with my friends - an asshole mostly, but with random strangers I hold back a bit since they might take me more seriously than I mean to come off.

No, just to kill time and find interesting things, read up on news, fitness type things etc.

I guess I use the internet the way a lot of people watch TV. I rarely watch TV so instead I go online - I think TV is saturated with boring shows that are complete wastes of time. The only things I like to watch on TV are comedy news shows like The Daily Show and Colbert Report or documentaries in National Geographic/Science Channel. Anytime there isn't one of those things and I don't have something else to do I'm most likely online.

Searching for help/answers to various problems/questions I had - for example, it was WC3 editting stuff for TH, and recommendations (or otherwise :p) of local ISP's for boards.ie

Are you yourself on the internet? Are you trying to be someone else?
As much as possible, I try to be myself - I don't have any reason (that springs to mind, at least) to create an internet alter-ego although, in general, I tend to observe much more than contribute so that'd make a separate online identity a bit redundant IMO.

Do you use online fora as an escape route from the daily struggles or other bothersome affairs?
I use fora, for the most part, for the sake of seeing everyone's opinions and discussions on... anything and everything, really (except maybe politics and sports :p). Aside from occasionally checking the Humour section, I wouldn't really consider my usage of a forum as an escape from daily struggles and that sort of stuff.

Okay, thanks guys, this is helping a lot... I would like to elabroate on my questions however:
I have heard that for example autistic people can learn or try socializing on the internet via various fora or communities. What's your thoughts on this?
Do you have more... "identity"-related stuff you can tell me? :p

I usually just stumble upon community sites when I'm searching for something (anything). For example, I found this place here, which is also called thehelper.net when I was searching for WC3 WE tutorials.

I'm trying to be as much myself as I can, but it's obvius that internet is a kind of a lens, distorting the users true nature.

I'm in internet for relax, I don't need to escape reality (not yet, hopefully never), but I also use internet for schoolwork and creative things, like composing music or making maps in Hammer.

Can't think of any questions of my own I could answer.

Oh here's one! Facebook is a good way to interact with peeps and organize - things.

Well the internet has a lot of ups and downs. The main up is stated in the question- Your physical looks are anonymous unless you want them not to be, so people won't judge you by your looks or make fun of your accent (Like the bullies always do in the movies) This is a huge plus, since the modern community is becoming more and more materialistic.

Just my 2 pennies :3

TheHelper.net - I found TH by searching for something way back in 2005 about the World Editor for Warcraft III. Been here since.
MySpace.com - My neighbor was like "Hai you should get a myspace and add me!", so I did.
Facebook.com - Myspace died, facebook came up in interweb power.

Are you yourself on the internet? Are you trying to be someone else?

I'm pretty much the same in person too, I'm sure there is a slight difference as with everyone, but for the most part, I act and talk the same way.

Do you use online fora as an escape route from the daily struggles or other bothersome affairs?
Nope.

Well, you can't really be someone else but yourself. Isn't that so.. Really?
It's all too easy to create the illusion that you're someone other than you (in terms of personality, at least) IMO - you could be a level-headed, polite person when it comes to real life, but it's not hard to give the impression that you're an aggressive, rude asshole on the internet. If you can maintain the image, who would think differently about you unless they knew you personally?

Do you have more... "identity"-related stuff you can tell me?
Anything in particular? The question seems a little vague to me so I honestly have no idea of what exactly you're looking for :p

I first stumble upon TheHelper.Net when I was trying to play around with the newly bought WarCraft III in 2006. At that time, the CD disc is pretty new on the shelves of the general store in my local area.

I was led to it by the awe-inspiring map community in WarCraft III, where at first, I don't much about it and so on. Before that, my dreams were to become a programmer (not progamer, didn't misspell.) and create a game all by myself. Someone told me that the World Editor that was shipped with the game is easy enough to learn the bits and parts of a game. And then, everything starts from there.

Are you yourself on the internet? Are you trying to be someone else?

Yes, I'm by myself. Yes, I'm being me. If you do a quick search of my username, you'll see that I have made quite a lot of questions almost everywhere I go. I do this, because I wanted the Internet to remember that I had once existed. I had once been "alive".

Do you use online fora as an escape route from the daily struggles or other bothersome affairs?

Nope. Instead of being an escape route, it's more like "a self-taught method to maturity". I had some ups and down back in the past, but I'm still here. My motto ever since joined here in 2005 (and changed accounts before) is "Learning the ropes".

I don't give up on what I had grasped onto. I never will. And this is what I come to face from the daily struggles of real-life. Everything I come across, whether it's social events, or it's stressful situations, I always think to myself, "Where can I get answers from?", and this is the place.

Well, not really. Half of the time is spent on googling for answers. Half of the other time is spent asking questions to other people, making them feel like I'm a devotee to being simple-minded and being controversal at the same time.

That's just me.

So you wanna be famous on the internet, Do Ya?
Why not in real life? Well, then you can be sure you would be remembered for sure. lol

I found this site (and most other sites that I am active on) via google. When I'm online I try to be more formal and polite than I would normally be but I don't think it really changes my personality too much. I don't use it as an escape, but more like expanding my horizons and showing others my work.
