Spam/unknown mail from unknown person/email address...

Hi,

Um, I don't know if this is a stupid question to ask, but I am a newbie after all(the name says it all); so here goes - I just happened to get a random email from some random that I don't know, and got a message from this person, I was wandering if I should reply to this spammer/unknown sender and say something along the lines of "GET LOST YOU SPAMMER!!!" or GO TO HELL, I DON"T WANT YOUR USELESS VIRUS/MALWARE INFECTED ATTACHMENTS!" or maybe something funny like "GO SCREW YOURSELF WITH SOMEONE!"

Are there any consequences to replying to this unknown person? Will I get more messages from this person/email(like a reply to my reply which is a reply to it's original message? or maybe the person ignores it and send more?) or will it stop just for me being assertive and maybe a little abit of aggressiveness towards it?

Thanks people.

If it's a spam email then replying to it will most likely do nothing at all.

What were the contents of the email?

don't do it with your e-mail - then they will know that the person at e-mail XXX replied to same, and is a real e-mail address (lots of times the e-mails get sent to fake addresses/non-existent ones)

just mark it as spam and go on

Nothing at all? So i can say "F*** you get a life!" and nothing will happen; they'll just get the message and ignore it?

Contents "Really don't wanna hurt your feelings but [my email address],
This photo in attachment looks a lot like you and your ex getting at it. How did it leak online??." From: [email protected] - absolutely no idea who this person's email is!

And there was a zip file attachment called photo.zip, lol - I tried to download it(on my puppy linux OS) and Norton said it was virus...hehehe...I was hoping that see a picture of me and that person...even though I don't have one!!! Idiots....(I was curious, that's all...yes I do know the risk of downloading an attahcment from unknown may = virus/malware on my computer, but I doubt my puppy linux will be affected... :b)

Another random message: kucfl http://yPnaAtbS.page.tl apnb ltgkj from a some person's email: [email protected] (Where and how are they getting my email address??!!)

And now another just today at 12: "Hi there, [email protected], - some random's email address that's not even mine!!? And yet it still is sent to mine! -_-
Please read the attached offer, and let me know your opiinion. You really helped me out last time, I value your opinion a lot." and attached with a file called personal.zip from: [email protected] - again, no idea who this guy is....

Fake? how can it be fake if they can use it and send it?

just mark it as spam and go on
Already filterred in my spam folder, just was wandering how this happenned....

Geee, I think my email is a core spammers' victim!

Thanks

no, meaning don't use your real e-mail address, lets put it this way:

if you don't touch it (don't respond or follow any links from the e-mail), they won't know if it reached a person or not and if that person read it or not, but if you click on a link or respond, they know they have a person who read their e-mail at your e-mail address, and will send you 100x more times the spam - it's just like a telemarketer, if you talk to them, they will know to call your number more often in the future, but if you don't even pick up, they are less likely to bother with you again

if you MUST send an e-mail to them (which will probably be ignored, but to make you feel better), sign up for another e-mail account (a fake one) and send the e-mail from there, and then watch if that e-mail gets spammed later on

hehehehehehehehe, now comes the fun part...:D...let's see how they like it when their prey is now their predator! The turn of the tides have come, I am a victim no longer! I will hunt those who hunt me! We must strike!(Quote from someone in WarCraft III, that I still remember...) ;)

Slapshot is right, if you reply to these spammers emails the chances of you getting more will increase, because they know that you check that email and you will confirm that for them.

EDIT: To your last post, they probably wouldn't even check the email nevermind open the attachment.

their account is probably already flagged as a spammer account and deleted or similar.. it's just a computer bot that makes the account, sends spam email to random accounts, then moves on and makes a new account - your not going to win this fight

...or maybe that made it that their account cannot be replied to...and keeps my fake email address in their record and will eventually start using that to spam messages....-_-

-_- damn.... Is there a way to find this bot? Probably not....I would disable it if I could... ...smart computer programmers....wish I could be one of them and find out what their doing and where they are located either in the world or in the internet and end this fight.... -_-

I wander if the instant when I received the message, I could send one back using my fake email....before thier email is disabled....hehehe, I'd probably starting up some kind of spam battle to see who'd spam the most....:D Either that or it'd be ignored and no spam battle....

Seriously, don't open emails or attachments from people you don't know. Just report it as spam, then delete. simple as that !

How does spam work? said:
A significant percentage of spam is direct marketing. Spam starts out as a simple message-- a message that is sent to thousands or millions of email addresses. This kind of spam is like telemarketing--both have legitimate purposes and both are difficult to stop.

A disguised version of internet marketing spam is called phishing. Phishing is particularly dangerous because these folks are trying to collect and use your personally identifying information for the purpose of stealing or using your identity. Read more about identity theft.

Sometimes spam is self-propagating--and more dangerous. Much spam is loaded with what is called "mal-ware" or bad software. Viruses, trojan horses, and spyware can be linked or embedded in an email message, playing on the tiny percentage of unsuspecting individuals. Once someone clicks, though, the software propagates and spreads to more users.
How email lists are born

Spammers get their email lists in many different ways. Some are lists purchased from legitimate vendors where individuals have given permission to share their personal information with "partners." Spammers also obtain lists of email addresses from other spammers or from specialized contractors who harvest email addresses from the internet. Email addresses are "harvested" by automated robots that comb the internet looking for strings of characters with "mailto" links or an @ sign in the middle.
Why is it so hard to fight?

Spam is difficult to fight because there are so many different ways to fight it. Both the good guys and the bad guys are limited and enabled by the technology at their disposal. The technology of fighting spam is like a game of leap frog. When the good guys patch one hole, the bad guys exploit another.

...I see, so there's truly no way of physically stopping spammers....without them coming back at us with even more ways?

...hmmmm, slapshot, you're right - perhaps I can't defeat this war on my own....even if I could, I'd take it that it would take time to pick off all the spammers and disabling their bots one by one....if only I was immortal....and had the unmatched skills of a programmer and the brains of a spammer....

Well, I suppose if this stops here, I guess I appreciated everyone who helped and I'll just mark them as spam and eventually deleted them if I don't know them, though this doesn't really stop the fact that spammers got my mail address! With that, they'll be coming back for more:rolleyes:...damn legit companies getting bribed to give away our e-mail address:mad:....and also damn those custom made automated bots on the internet! -_- But we can't stop them, only to become one of them or just act you didn't see them....
