Private companies should be able to buy land on The Moon or other planets for tourism, mining or even to sell property, a space policy expert has said.
Rand Simberg said that if governments started to provide property rights then entrepreneurs and billionaires might pile in and invest - and added that the 'time is ripe'.
He has proposed a law that would circumvent the 1967 Outer Space Treaty, which states no individual or government can have sovereignty over any body in space

Ok now thats just bullshit, why would you let someone buy a planet? what if theres intelligent life on that planet? we're basicly allowing people to buy others and its slavery all over again

Cursing and swearing with fervor doesn't make an opinion intuitive. Since civilization is economic based and run, then buying planets makes total sense since in the foreseeable future, people will be landing on these plants for whatever reason.

First of all, they're most likely talking about nearby planets, such as those in our solar system. We know that there is no intelligent life on them.
Second, buying a piece of land doesn't make everyone slaves who lives on it. Especially if humans start settling on other planets it'll be like renting a house.

Why's that? Where's the difference in owning a square kilometer of land where you build houses on, owning a country or owning a planet?
How can you buy a piece of land on Earth? Who owns it? Does it belong to anyone?
If the answer is yes, then why shouldn't the moon belong to someone?

Just because it's not "on Earth"? That's a pretty narrow view of things.
Just because it's far away or unreachable by simple means? It was the same when Australia or America were colonized. At that time owning land actually did mean owning people, but we're far away from the laws in the past.
Just because no one has owned it before? Well, see colonialization in the past.


It's another step of putting a price tag on everything, which I don't like. But that's how our civilization is. Buying planets is inevitable.

Buying planets will lead to war.

If somebody can buy it, someone else has to own it first.
If nobody owns it yet the only way to make it yours is to just take it and claim it as yours.
This will make others, those who didnt do this because they feel it is immoral or cant because they are not able to, very angry and the outcome will be aggression.

Either a long discussion about the topic with every country on earth getting an apropriate piece of it or it will end in war.

I guess they pay the country that claims it. Which begs the question, how does a country claim a planet. And if the country has claimed the planet it'll be reasonable to suggest they'll pay some sort of fee to that country.

Uhhh you're allowed to buy a cat. Pretty sure that's intelligent life and technically not slavery. And as to who is allowed to buy it: how about whoever manages to get there first? I mean I don't care if Warren Buffet wants to buy Mars, if I get there first I have dibs.

And if Accname gets Mars I want Saturn. Selling lots on the asteroid belt: great view, planetfront property. Credit check required, cash only.

    I bitch about Xenforo sometimes but it really is full featured you just have to really know what you are doing to get the most out of it.

    I do know this - xenforo dropped the ball by not keeping the vbulletin reputation comments as a feature. The loss of the Reputation comments data when we switched to Xenforo really was the death knell for the site when it came to all the users that left. I know I missed it so much and I got way less interested in the site when that feature was gone and I run the site.
