Two U.S. Marine Corps’ (USMC) AV-8B Harrier jets were forced to drop 4 bombs on the Great Barrier Reef in Australia this week, NBC News is reporting, citing two unidentified U.S. officials.

The incident occurred on July 16 while the jets were flying on a training mission that would have them drop the ordnances on a bombing range on Townshend Island, an island off the coast of Queensland in Australia.

For an unidentified reason, the bombing range was not cleared by the time the jets reached it, forcing them to pull back. According to the news report, the jets could not land with the ordnances still on board and after circling around, they soon began running low on fuel.

“They chose to save the aircraft,” NBC News quoted an unnamed U.S. official as saying.

Each jet dropped two 500-pound bombs on the Great Barrier Reef, the largest coral marine in the world. Fortunately, two of the bombs, BDU 45s, were inert to begin with and thus did not explode. The other two ordnances, GBU 12s, were unarmed when the pilots decided to drop them and have not yet exploded.

Uh..
Couldn't they have flown a little further away from the reef before dropping it?

I don't see what the problem is, considering none of them were primed when dropped and none have exploded...? Would you rather the plane crashed into the reef?

Edit:
Isnt that like a cultural heritage or something?!
A world heritage site, just like Bikini Atoll.

That's not the point. I find it annoying that they wouldn't think something through. Personally, when I plan on doing something, it's always thoroughly planned out and so if something does go wrong, they have a second/third/fourth/fifth option (should they ever need a sixth, it's there).

Yeah but nothing really went bad though. So there is no problem. Unprimed bombs don't explode.

it's still leaving 2 tons of junk at a national heritage site - imagine how much pollution/trash 2 tons left behind is - that's the equivalent of how many tourists?

Really, the question is... why the reef? Why not just a little bit over so it wouldn't damage that fragile thing?

Because they were fucktard enough to not have thought of dropping it somewhere a further away from the fuckin' reef.

Sure FireCat! Take your little motorboat and just pick up a 500pound bomb.

Also this wouldnt wash up on the beaches even if there was no reef between it!

You really should not talk about pure stupidity, I can't stand this spam on every article..

How do four 500 pound bombs add up to two tons?

Never Know LOL

Idiotic' pair pick up unexploded 2ft bombs that washed ashore - to 'sell them for scrap metal'

The MoD today recovered two 2ft-long unexploded bombs which were seen being casually carried along by two men who found them washed up on a beach. The pair were pictured with the two potentially deadly rusty 120mm tank shells slung over the shoulders. Onlookers watched as the men strolled past them with the explosives that date back to the Cold War
It is believed the unidentified pair may have seized the bombs to try and later cash in as scrap metal.

The MoD confirmed today following an urgent appeal that the shells had been 'swiftly recovered'.

The shells were found washed up at Warbarrow Bay, Dorset. The area is part of the 7,000-acre Lulworth Military Range used by the Army for tank firing practice..

that sucks i bet they are expensive
  • Varine Varine:
    Not really
  • Varine Varine:
The entire hot end is like 20 dollars, I just can't get anymore until next week
  • Varine Varine:
I ordered like five blocks for 15 dollars. They're just little aluminum blocks with holes drilled into them
  • Varine Varine:
They are pretty much disposable. I have shitty nozzles though, and I don't think these were designed for how hot I've run them
  • Varine Varine:
I tried to extract it but the thing is pretty stuck. Idk what else I can use this for
  • Varine Varine:
I'll throw it into my scrap stuff box, I'm sure can be used for something
  • Varine Varine:
I have spare parts for like, everything BUT that block lol. Oh well, I'll print this shit next week I guess. Hopefully it fits
  • Varine Varine:
I see that, despite your insistence to the contrary, we are becoming a recipe website
  • Varine Varine:
    Which is unique I guess.
  • The Helper The Helper:
Actually I was just playing with having some kind of mention of the food forum and recipes on the main page to test and see if it would engage some of those people to post something. It is just weird to get so much traffic and no engagement
  • The Helper The Helper:
So what it really is me trying to implement some kind of better site navigation not change the whole theme of the site
  • Varine Varine:
How can you tell the difference between real traffic and indexing or AI generation bots?
  • The Helper The Helper:
The bots will show up as users online in the forum software but they do not show up in my stats tracking. I am sure there are bots in the stats but the way alot of the bots treat the site do not show up on the stats
  • Varine Varine:
I want to build a filtration system for my 3d printer, and that shit is so much more complicated than I thought it would be
  • Varine Varine:
Apparently ABS emits styrene particulates which can be like .2 micrometers, which idk if the VOC detectors I have can even catch that
  • Varine Varine:
Anyway I need to get some of those sensors and two air pressure sensors installed before an after the filters, which I need to figure out how to calculate the necessary pressure for and I have yet to find anything that tells me how to actually do that, just the cfm ratings
  • Varine Varine:
And then I have to set up an arduino board to read those sensors, which I also don't know very much about but I have a whole bunch of crash course things for that
  • Varine Varine:
These sensors are also a lot more than I thought they would be. Like 5 to 10 each, idk why but I assumed they would be like 2 dollars
  • Varine Varine:
Another issue I'm learning is that a lot of the air quality sensors don't work at very high ambient temperatures. I'm planning on heating this enclosure to like 60C or so, and that's the upper limit of their functionality
  • Varine Varine:
Although I don't know if I need to actually actively heat it or just let the plate and hotend bring the ambient temp to whatever it will, but even then I need to figure out an exfiltration for hot air. I think I kind of know what to do but it's still fucking confusing
  • The Helper The Helper:
Maybe you could find some of that information from AC tech - like how they detect freon and such
