London (AFP) - People found guilty of Internet "trolling" in Britain could be jailed for up to two years under government proposals outlined on Sunday, following a number of high-profile cases of abusive and threatening behaviour on Twitter.

Justice Secretary Chris Grayling told the Mail on Sunday newspaper: "This is a law to combat cruelty -- and marks our determination to take a stand against a baying cyber-mob."

There has been increasing concern in Britain about the growing scourge of Internet "trolls" who post hate-filled messages on social media, often threatening their targets.

The parents of missing girl Madeleine McCann are among the most recent victims, and last month a man was jailed for 18 weeks for what prosecutors described as "a campaign of hatred" against a female lawmaker.

"These internet trolls are cowards who are poisoning our national life. No-one would permit such venom in person, so there should be no place for it on social media," Grayling said.

Britain going after Internet Trolls. Good Luck - likely only going to end up harassing a whole lot of innocent people. I don't understand why people who don't understand the Internet make laws like this. I can see them caving to the pressure of people that are being trolled and I agree that being trolled can be a traumatic experience but it is the freaking Internet - Leave it to Britain to try and prosecute people for trolling....

Since when is trolling the same as putting fear of life or physical harm remotely the same thing? There is a huge difference - what they're talking about is like actual threats, which obviously are probably never going to be fulfilled because only fucking idiots tell someone they're going to hurt them beforehand. "Yeah man I'll be by in like a week or so to kill you bro. kthxby"

Also that article really jumped about - along with having no idea who Madeleine McCann is, I'm failing to see how a missing child is related, and all in all I would give it a straight up F. There is literally no valuable information, it's just a series of random quotes and tidbits with no real interconnecting information to make it a comprehensible piece of journalism.

Its just a psychological think I would guess.
I dont think they seriously try to go for someone, but perhaps the law is supposed to scare people. Like little kids in school who will think twice about it because they know its now illegal and they are afraid.

By the way, what they describe is not trolling. What I do is trolling and its far more hillarious.

It seems like an effective law to 'legalize' government access to otherwise perceptibly private internets without directly saying they're doing that.

That too, it has much usefulness. Britain knows how to repress its citizens. They know all the tricks.

Post opinions opposing the current government? Trolling, clearly. Jail time for you!

I'm not on that piece of shit island. My country has the balls to just lie about it and write straight up laws that say they spy on me.

They'll just watch you masturbate while masturbating and watch some decapitation video and have a so-called bad ending, to feel better about their lives and shit on random people supposedly "trolling", to feel like they've accomplished something. Stupid island monkeys, taking the piss of any random stranger in the world and being a bitch about it all for the sake of receiving pity and attention. I wonder if they even have prisons big enough to hold them all.

They can just put up a fence and make the entire country a prison. We tried that for a while to keep the Mexicans in their prison, but it turns out the only people willing to build a giant fence in the desert for minimum wage was the Mexicans.

They are already all being monitored, in London at least. Well, not that their privacy matters to me, I'm just saying British people are letting themselves get fucked by their own government. The fence thing could happen if they decide to force unemployed immigrants to build it, I heard they have alot.
