You can think what ever you want, and post it. But don't you think destructive criticism takes it farther than what you described? It's pretty much saying that the bed frame is useless and you know for sure that no one would like it and there's no point in building anymore, all that without having sold a single bed frame yourself?

I personally think Destrctive cricism is idiotic. I am not enforcing that, I agree with seth about it.

See, but here is where I am comming at. if i read someones poem or story and hated it to death. I would not say,

"OMG, what the fudge-nat was the shizz-nat? Go jump off a bridge that was terrible, no one would ever read that perposely."

No, I am saying we should say.

"sorry, that was terrible. The story is very generic for this genre, Dragons that morph into humans has been done over and over, its hard to do uniquely. The main character was bland, I go no feel for his emotions or anything about him. The setting is terrible, why would they be fighting with swords when they are in the year 2213 and as you said 'at the peak of technology'. And lastly, you miss-spelt 'foot'".

Clearly gets the point across and is 'constructive'

I don't see why there would be ANY objection to the use of curse words.

Curse words are irrevocably the most unavoidable thing to not experience in an online community. It's virtually impossible to not hear, or read a curse word if you are actively involved in social endeavors or if you're involved in an online community like The Helper.

I'm perfectly okay with that :)

Writing is much more methodical than something like speaking. You're writing a post, you should have the patience and intelligence to replace words that are considered "bad" by the general society with something more to the point.

Ever heard that vulgar language betrays a limited vocabulary?

If you don't understand what that means, using words like "shit" and "fuck" a lot show that you must not have a well-established vocabulary to replace these general words with something else that is both to the same point and just as impacting.

So don't do it :)

I don't object a censor in common posts, i object to censoring stories. People who talk like you type are few and far between, and often are considered pretentious and annoying in an actual discussion. (No offense intended to present company)

What was so offensive about my post? Apparently we don't like Kurt Vonnegut or something about Poe?

Technically, an attachment is not part of the forum and I cannot make anyone censor those. Also technically, stories should be attachments anyway because huge stories in posts create scrolling problems.

Also, Spoiler tags hide things. Technically, anything in a Spoiler [including those huge texts I was just talking about] is censored, even if it's not censored IN the spoiler. However, a disclaimer needs to be attached as well before the spoiler.

That's the best you're going to get, guys. Please let the topic die unless you REALLY have something new to add to this discussion. I will be editing the rules very shortly [within a week being "very" shortly] to reflect on the changes we've had.

I don't think this should be a rule per-say, but I've noticed quite frequently people reply to a piece with "grammatical errors". I believe that on a level the author should be responsible for correcting these, but i also believe that these people posting "grammatical errors" should put up or shut up. If your not willing to post the larger of the grammatical errors, then your not really helping them.

If your not willing to post the larger of the grammatical errors, then your not really helping them.

But if I just posted the corrected version of their story for them without telling them WHY I made those changes, then it wouldn't help them at all afterwards. And teaching people the basics of english grammar is much too tedious a task to be done on a forums page. For some, they just don't understand the rules, and posting the corrected version is not enough for them.

But for you, I feel I can correct yours, and explain the rule: when using your, you should be describing someone's ownership of something. The conjunction, you're, or you - are, is what you were looking for in the above quote. Twice. I'll let you look for the rest in your entire post.

Rules have been re-written to explain each one in more depth. I haven't officially added a lack of swearing rule. I would like more discussion on this ban of "Grammatical error" reports being a simple "You have grammatical errors" because I understand WS's position very well. People tell me Corruption has spelling and grammatical errors constantly.

I constantly tell people I bloody know and that if they're not going to high light them or help me out, they need to keep their big yaps shut :)

In my opinion, that should be a sign for you to go through your story and revise and edit it; regardless of everyone else's skills, I know that you're capable of correcting your own mistakes. Corruption is a long read, and an even longer one if you're trying to fix someone else's typos and what not. Maybe, since it's your story and not mine, you should want to find and fix those mistakes, to make it better or somethin'. I know that I sure as hell don't have the time to read all of Corruption, let alone revise the entire schpeal, and I doubt many others on here do, either.

P.S. Did my suggested rule become an anti-rule? Aw, man.

Fatman hit the nail on the head. If you don't tell someone they have grammatical errors, they probably won't realize it. However, with the myriad errors to be found in 90% of the writing that warrants a "grammatical error" comment, it would take hours to correct a single story. We're not English professors here; we can tell you that your story has errors, but we can't go through the whole thing in MS Word and say, "Dangling participle" or "weak passive voice" or "incorrect antecedent." There just isn't enough time or, more importantly, motivation. If you want, we could be more precise, possibly saying that the majority of the grammatical errors are of a certain type. But that's about the extent to which anyone is going to bother fixing them.

My suggestion is that when you see that nasty little two-word criticism, you take the initiative to go buy Eats, Shoots and Leaves and learn to pick out your grammatical mistakes by yourself. I don't think anyone here has a problem reading stories and making specific comments about content or characterization, but as I've said before, grammar is something you should be learning in school or on your own; it's your responsibility to make your writing intelligible, not ours.

If a blank reply comes to this page, sorry, -still new here and I don't visit much. Any way, where do you start? Is there a certain program here you need to type it in?

You may use a word processor to type in your story or poem. Then you copy all the words you wrote and paste them within a new post.

Or just type it up here without said word possessor and have no hope at all to save it if your power goes out.

Wow... just went back and read through this thread... I really was a little prick when I was 18.

But to the point, just so this isn't spam, perhaps a general rule might be considered: if you're eager enough to add your own stories or other prose to the WC and expect others to read and comment on them, then you need to be willing to read and comment the works of others. It's implied that you'd want to participate, of course, but there does seem to be a distinct lack of appreciation for fellows' works. It's only fair, really.

And besides, if the few people that still regularly visit the WC would make sure to peruse and comment each and everyone's work, it might help bring the others back here that used to be regulars. The inactivity is killin' this place for everyone. =(
