The portable nuclear reactor is the size of a hot tub. It’s shaped like a sake cup, filled with a uranium hydride core and surrounded by a hydrogen atmosphere. Encase it in concrete, truck it to a site, bury it underground, hook it up to a steam turbine and, voila, one would generate enough electricity to power a 25,000-home community for at least five years.

Necessity is the mother of invention ... and some really bad ideas

Mein Gott. I was so hoping that this article was from The Onion or something. Porta-nukes will power oil-shale melters, because there's just no topping the American spirit -- the willingness to take a truly abysmal idea (oil shales) and make it worse:

I suppose that's why they're buried, yes. What could possibly go wrong? These things are "deep" underground and quake-proof, aren't they? :rolleyes:

It could be useful in rural areas vise-versa, but would it be as destructive as Chernobyl if it broke? In which case, dismantle it quick...

Why not just Hydrogen? If that blows up all you get is a lot of fire, not a shockwave and a chain-reaction of splitting atoms that could destroy a city!

And the only reason I think they did they did that was cuz he was like late 30s, and that is kind of the age that they have the last chance at that
