KINSHASA (Reuters) - Police in Congo have arrested 13 suspected sorcerers accused of using black magic to steal or shrink men's penises after a wave of panic and attempted lynchings triggered by the alleged witchcraft.

Reports of so-called penis snatching are not uncommon in West Africa, where belief in traditional religions and witchcraft remains widespread, and where ritual killings to obtain blood or body parts still occur.

Rumours of penis theft began circulating last week in Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of Congo's sprawling capital of some 8 million inhabitants. They quickly dominated radio call-in shows, with listeners advised to beware of fellow passengers in communal taxis wearing gold rings.

Purported victims, 14 of whom were also detained by police, claimed that sorcerers simply touched them to make their genitals shrink or disappear, in what some residents said was an attempt to extort cash with the promise of a cure.

That's the most insane way of compensating for a tiny penis i've seen so far: "A wizard did it and i want to kill everybody who looks somewhat like him"

It might be hilarious...if people weren't being murdered for completely imaginary crimes.

"Penis panic" is pretty standard among countries where the Enlightenment hasn't quite sunk in yet. Stories about women stealing men's genitals, or teleporting them into trees and bird nests, were taken seriously as evidence of black magic during the witch trials in Europe and America. It may be a body dysmorphic disorder, similar to anorexia or bulimia: these men believe that their genitals are smaller -- or even that they've totally disappeared or crawled up into their bellies -- despite all evidence to the contrary.

See this article, www.kuro5hin.org/story/2002/9/16/81843/6555, for more on the phenomenon in general, and this article, www.accessmylibrary.com/coms2/summary_0286-25500653_ITM, for the relation to European witchcraft. (The last article is rather academic, and not reproduced in full, but you'll have a general idea of what the author's talking about.)
