LOS ANGELES - An openly gay teen was voted prom queen at Los Angeles' Fairfax High School in a campaign that began as a stunt but ended up spurring discussion on the campus about gender roles and teen popularity. Sergio Garcia, 18, was crowned queen Saturday night at the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel.

"I feel invincible," Garcia said in his tiara and charcoal-gray tuxedo.

A few days earlier, he gave a speech that won over some cynics and led to an ovation and his unlikely victory.

I guess I'm glad he won something and didn't et bashed or anything. On the other hand gay ≠ transgendered. Therefore he should not be allowed to be elected queen. The fact of the matter is that he is a male.

Who cares?

Queen or King, it's just a noun. It never defines a specific kind of gender.

I think that it is wrong be these terms:

1. Queen is usually a femal form/word whatever.

2. It is not discriminating since there is a male option aswell, aka king.

3. What about the prom king then? If he is straight, then he would not be that comfortable dancing with another guy:(

When it comes to these things I feel that they are going to damn far with their talk about discrimination when they start picking about nice traditions.

I also think that this is a little discriminating in the other direction aswell, they only think about the "gay-rights", but what about the guy that is elected king then? Does he not have any rights?

You have absolutely no idea what you're talking about. Queens are females. Kings are males.
There's no other difference between the two.

"Gay rights". Why do gays get their own collection of 'rights', that are different to those of straight people. What happened to 'human rights', which every human should have? No more, no less. Nothing different, regardless of gender, race or sexuality.

Reverse discrimination sucks. It's fine to be a Queen if you're gay all of a sudden? If you say anything against that, you're homophobic?
I bet if somebody opened a "Straight Bar", it'd be closed down, and the owner would be charged for sexual discrimination.

I think that it would be ok if a gay was elected king, or a transexual was chosen queen or something. However, gays are not female. The queen spot should be open to a high school girl.

Uh...He wishes to be called "queen".

He is known as not straight. Some people mentioned he could be claustrophobic..., I can't tell a lie, I really don't know.

---------------

About "queen" and "king", I believe it's just a name.

Queen is a name for a female leader.
King is a name for a male leader.

Wouldn't it hurt to switch the meanings around?
And when you do, does the person (or the person's gender) gets switched around?

The person is still a person, and his/her gender never gets switched, so there's nothing wrong with being called "queen", even though he is a male.

______________

Think of this way, pretend you're an alien. When you come to a planet known as Earth, what would you call it if you're going to name it? 99.9% it won't be called Earth, because the word "Earth" is invented by us.

When you come down onto this land, and you hear people speaking a language you don't even know, what alien words are you going to use to give this new "finding" a meaning for it?

If you can give it a definition, then you'll realize "king" and "queen" are just a noun. You can give whatever meanings you can think of to these nouns. While giving such definitions, when you face the so-called "king" and "queen", you'll see two people, both opposite genders. So, what alien word would you come up with that can describe both kinds of people? You can give "boy" a meaning of "female", and "girl" a meaning of "male".

It's just that we all recognize "king" and "queen" like it is the king and queen. Why not look at it in a different way?

I don't think you understand.

Correct:
A King is a male monarch.
A Queen is a female monarch.

Incorrect:
A King is a straight monarch.
A Queen is a gay monarch.

I'm sorry, I can't help it: :D

A queen is a gay monarch, which means a queen is a happy monarch.

But, I can tell where you're going. I guess I went along a different route.

Very well said Romek; I concur. People (not necessarily only homosexuals) get so obsessed with fighting for rights that they end up taking away the rights of others. By having 2 males elected for prom, they take away the chance from a female.

Have it your way then, Mrs. Tom-Mai.

By having 2 males elected for prom, they take away the chance from a female.

Considering they were willing to elect a gay person for queen, I don't think it would be too far a stretch to say they wouldn't elect a lesbian for King. In which case, the end balance is that the two pretty much cancel each other out and everyone still has the same chance again.

On top of that, the gay guy winning could be seen as just a form of competition. It's just that he was competing with girls instead of all they guys. Under this view, is it such a bad thing then that he won? After all, he just won the competition then. It would be just like any competition where the only person of an opposite gender wins.

I don't have much to say about the queen/king euphemisms. Though according to Merriam Webster, the definition of Queen has an 8th definiton to it:

8. often disparaging : a male homosexual ; especially : an effeminate one

Dictionary.com says

4. Slang: Disparaging and Offensive.
a. a male homosexual, esp. one who is flamboyantly campy.

YourDictionary.com

7: Slang a male homosexual, specif. one with pronounced feminine characteristics: term of contempt or derision

The Free Dictionary

6. Offensive Slang Used as a disparaging term for a homosexual man.

In all of these cases, the title still fits. In all these cases though, the term is mainly used offensively, but I think they did it anyways since they figured nobody would take it under that context anyways.

The point of the king and queen system is that 1 girl and 1 boy are supposed to be chosen. This is to provide an equal opportunity for both genders. It doesn't matter that the king may be gay and the queen a lesbian, the important thing is that the gender balance is maintained. It's supposed to be an equal opportunity thing.

And I disagree that somehow gays attack the rights of other people when they try to secure human dignity and the legal recognition of their love.

I'm gay, and I agree with what Romek about Gay rights. I totally disagree with what they are doing. So please don't generalize :(.

After reading some posts I do have to say that people have to lighten up a bit....
