I think it depends of the serie you are watching/reading. I loved Samurai Champloo in anime but the Shaman King anime was disapointing (while the manga was second to god lol).

Claymore is one of the best things that ever happened to me...well, in the anime world. I love it :D

Shaman King = masterpiece! The T.V. version is really good and the japanese voice are sooo cool! Yoh is the best. If I could suggest everyone who loved the anime to read the books. In my opinion, they're much better than the serie :D Shaman King is my 3rd best serie right after Death Note...
