Buy yourself a cheap computer and put Pfsense (http://www.pfsense.com) on it. Works great for me.

I know it sounds corny, but you could also try looking for updated drivers for your Wifi adapter. We use Dell systems at work and the wireless adapters have been having so many problems until I updated to the most current drivers. Just a thought.

You can also use a software like phpBB (http://www.phpbb.com) You can install rep mods and customer title modes as well as custom themes. It may not be as user friendly as vBulletin, but its free. My forum runs off of phpBB http://www.rh-factor.net/forum
