Well the idea is for the gate to block access to a bridge, and the gate must be the width of the bridge. The gate is supposed to be destroyed so that the units can get through. If I use pathing blockers, things just wouldn't work right.
I found that I can make a gate larger by going to Object Editor > Destructibles > Demonic Gate (vertical)... and change Maximum/Minimum scale.
However, this only seems to change its visible appearance in the game. The only part of the gate that is actually solid and blocks units is a small...

Thanks for the reply! I actually got it figured out, mostly, just a bit ago. The players aren't started at a random spot but they can at least be on the same side as their team and still choose whichever color/race they want. It's close enough for me.
