How to change your Battle.net name in Starcraft 2
By Fred Smith
Looking for a way to change your name in Starcraft 2? While Blizzard has stated they won’t allow vanity name changes currently, under certain circumstances you can have your name changed by contacting their customer service department.

First, you’ll need to visit this link and fill out their email form. Choose Starcraft 2 from the product listing, Account Issues as your category, and Account Profile as your issue. It should look like this:

Then, plead your case. In my case, I chose my name (Fred) as my Battle.net identifier, assuming incorrectly that I was entering a name purely for the single player campaign, and not for the multiplayer. After I realized this I wanted to change it to something different. I told them I wasn’t comfortable with my real name being the same as my Battle.net name. After all, “Fred” doesn’t exactly strike fear in the hearts of my opponents. A little more then 24 hours after I sent my request I received this email back:

Greetings,

Thank you for taking the time to contact us with your question about your StarCraft 2 character name. At this time we will not be able to offer vanity name changes for StarCraft II character names. In your case, the name that has already been selected for your character does appear to match the information we have on record for the account holder. I will be working with you to see if we can get this name changed on your behalf. Please note that this is not a grantee that we will be able to assist, only that we are making a request on your behalf.

In order to proceed with this requested name change, and before I can move forward I will need to know the following information -

A) Your Full name as it appears:

B) Battle.net account name:

C) Your Current Character Name:

D) Your Character Code (Which may be verified by scrolling over your character portrait with your mouse):

E) Five character names that you would be happy with typed out exactly how you wish them to appear:

1 -
2 -
3 -
4 -
5 -

When selecting a name please make sure you check the StarCraft II naming policies: <http://us.blizzard.com/support/article.xml?locale=en_US&articleId=33748>

From this point forth, I will be known as “Hijinks”! So there you go, if you have a valid reason, you can change you name if the Blizzard powers deem your worthy.

Aug 12 2010Did not work for me… I had a very valid reason aswell

Greetings XXX,

At this time, we are unable to offer assistance in renaming your StarCraft II character. We encourage players to use caution when naming their character, as we are unable to provide any assistance in changing the choice of character name.

Should you feel the naming functionality needs adjustment, or wish to provide feedback on the process, please feel free to discuss the matter on the StarCraft II Forums: http://us.battle.net/sc2/en/forum/

Thank you for your inquiry and we apologize for any frustration this may cause.

Regards,

Oct 5 2010Don’t lose hope yet.

Blizzard has officially stated they will be implementing a free, one-time name change option for situations like you and I had. No exact ETA on its arrival, but I would look for it around November.

His post is so ridiculous. I mean seriously, they're asking for his full name(they already know that), account name, character name and character code.

And even if we assume that would mean what you're saying: "Blizzard Entertainment wishes to track every text and voice communication you say under one account name. Big Brother at your service."

How does it make them a GOVERNMENT spy agency?

First of all they DO record all your in-game chat messages, be it private or in a game.
When you install the game you have to agree to their Terms of Use. In there they state that.
I'm not sure about voice communication.

Secondly, they ask for his character name and character code to identify which player to rename. They obviously need his character name, and since they're not unique they need his code too.
They request his full name so no one could try to impersonate another player. Your full name is noted in your battlenet account (if you actually really entered it) so they only ask for it to compare it with their database to make sure you're the person you're claiming to be.

Lot of gaming companies do, but what you dont understand is they dont give them away to everyone, they keep stuff like that in case theres issues with you, your account. or get suspicious about something on your account, or if maybe your cheating in some way. You guys really need to drop the paranoia and get back into reality.

You'll understand why they ask for this stuff when you're older, kid. For now, go ahead and think that Blizzard and Government are out to get you.

Freaking ridiculous.

1st of all the fact that you take this thread literally is aboslutely hilarious even though it's not far from the truth.

We no longer have any privacy in this country is what this boils down too.
A quarter of us is on Facebook or some computer game who may or may not sell our personal info to other parties.
How many 5-6-7-8 year olds gave away thier mom and dads phone number and address when they signed up for Bnet becasue they figured they 'had' too, or were to young to realize they could just make up info.
Thats just plain fucking wrong.

The patriot act allows the government to intercept anyones communications for any reason they feel like.
Hell, in California, the police can place electronic tracking devices on your vehicle at thier own discretion. They can literally just walk onto your private driveway and stick soemthing to your car.

I guess the point im making is that every aspect of our lives anymore, even something so stupid as a damn computer game,
goes out of their way to make your privacy feel violated. I cant even talk about the weed I smoked last week with my friends without the risk of getting banned. It won't be long before this country resembles communist China.

I guess I don't really care. Unless if your doing something wrong why care if your monitored (As long as it doesn't disrupt what you need to get done). Who cares if the Gov. hears you tell your grandma you love her.

As usual, believing that all things happen only in the United States.

For your information, everyone on Battle Net must do that exact same procedure. That's more countries than I can count. No, you are not in danger of having your privacy exposed. Yes, Blizzard has access to that information. No, they care not what happens in your life. Yes, they have way too much information to handle anyway, so nothing's going to happen to you.

Yes, that means this thread is pointless, and will be closed.
