My friend helped me sort out a list of parts for a gaming computer, the total being just under $1400 AUD (so I can play Skyrim on MAX GRAPHICS fuck yeah). I'd like a second opinion though on these parts, and I'm hoping someone here will help me confirm that what I've picked is good, or direct me to somewhere where I can find someone who can help me. I'm worried about the case and the power supply, mostly.

GPU:
$548.00 - Asus nVidia GTX580

CPU:
$130.00 - Intel CPU Core i3-2100
http://www.centrecom.com.au/catalog/bx80623i32100-intel-core-2100-p-50593.html?sort=3a

Motherboard:
$139.00 - Asus P8P67-M-V3 Intel Mainboard (B3 Stepping)
http://www.centrecom.com.au/catalog/p8p67-asus-p8p67-intel-mainboard-stepping-p-52208.html?sort=2a

Memory:
$58.30 - G.SKILL DDR3 8GB (2 X 4GB) PC-10666/1333 F3-10666CL9D-8GBXL Ram
http://www.centrecom.com.au/catalog...06661333-10666cl9d-8gbxl-p-53097.html?sort=3a

Case:
$118.80 - Antec Dark Fleet DF-30
http://www.centrecom.com.au/catalog/761345-10030-antec-dark-fleet-p-46281.html?sort=3a

Heat sink:
$32.00 - CoolerMaster Hyper 212+ CPU Cooler
http://www.centrecom.com.au/catalog/212p-coolermaster-hyper-cooler-p-53517.html?sort=3a

Power supply:
$143.00 - Corsair HX-650
http://www.centrecom.com.au/catalog/cmpsu-650hx-corsair-p-41921.html?sort=3a

SSD:
$139.00 - OCZ Vertex 3 60GB SSD SATA3 2.5
http://www.centrecom.com.au/catalog/vtx3-25sat3-vertex-60gb-sata3-p-53286.html?sort=3a

HDD:
$58.00 - Western Digital Caviar Blue 1TB
http://www.centrecom.com.au/catalog/wd10ealx-western-digital-caviar-blue-p-48962.html?sort=3a

TOTAL: $1366.10

I plan to install Windows 7 64-bit and a few games on the SSD, and I don't plan to overclock anything (gets too hot down here in the summer for that, maybe in the winter).

Looks good to me, but I'd personally get rid of the SSD for a better CPU. CPU might bottleneck, though I'm just speaking freely here, not based on any substance.

I'm with sqrage here, I would recommend the same thing because the CPU will most likely bottleneck.

$550 for a GTX 580? Are you insane?

The GTX 580 is capped @ 363W which it uses under load. It offers slightly better performance than a HD 6950 which costs $262 (less than half) and uses only 256W under load. I read HAWX was supposedly biased for nVidia so here's some FPS.

If you can wait...
I know hardware nerds always like to say "wait for this/that" so let me just give you the numbers based on my own extensive research & guessing :D

CPU: FX-8120 "Bulldozer"
about? 8-'core' processor using new cost-effective technology, basically a highly overclockable server cpu turned desktop.
when? October 12th worldwide
price? ~$200
load? 100W
gaming? > i5-2500K
why? even if this doesnt interest you, the price-cuts on everything else is worth waiting for.

GPU: Radeon HD 7850
about? AMD's 2-year update in terms of graphics technology with a huge focus on power-efficiency.
when? November or December
price? ~$200
load? 90W
gaming? > HD 6950 or ~ GTX 580
why? this will likely be the biggest jump yet for both AMD & nVidia.

Remember; power consumption in watts typically translate to dollars per year for gamers. Idle is more important for healthy users, but it matters nevertheless.

wouldn't that have a much greater power draw (and heat output) then a single gtx 580?

it gets hot down here in the summer, and I don't want to make my computer an expensive heater...

if you look at a watt/heat per performance (FPS/etc.) - no, however it will have more heat AND more performance - but if you wanted to make it equal performance (i.e. limit the max FPS) then it would be cooler/more efficient

the idle power consumption of a gtx 570 is the same as a 580, so having two 570's on idle will consume double that power?

no, since the 2nd card in idle will not consume much power at all, look here

and also I don't know how reliable bit-tech is as a site, ive never heard of it before

Actually I was just playing with having some kind of mention of the food forum and recipes on the main page to test and see if it would engage some of those people to post something. It is just weird to get so much traffic and no engagement
  • The Helper The Helper:
So what it really is me trying to implement some kind of better site navigation not change the whole theme of the site
  • Varine Varine:
How can you tell the difference between real traffic and indexing or AI generation bots?
  • The Helper The Helper:
The bots will show up as users online in the forum software but they do not show up in my stats tracking. I am sure there are bots in the stats but the way alot of the bots treat the site do not show up on the stats
  • Varine Varine:
I want to build a filtration system for my 3d printer, and that shit is so much more complicated than I thought it would be
  • Varine Varine:
Apparently ABS emits styrene particulates which can be like .2 micrometers, which idk if the VOC detectors I have can even catch that
  • Varine Varine:
Anyway I need to get some of those sensors and two air pressure sensors installed before an after the filters, which I need to figure out how to calculate the necessary pressure for and I have yet to find anything that tells me how to actually do that, just the cfm ratings
  • Varine Varine:
And then I have to set up an arduino board to read those sensors, which I also don't know very much about but I have a whole bunch of crash course things for that
  • Varine Varine:
These sensors are also a lot more than I thought they would be. Like 5 to 10 each, idk why but I assumed they would be like 2 dollars
  • Varine Varine:
Another issue I'm learning is that a lot of the air quality sensors don't work at very high ambient temperatures. I'm planning on heating this enclosure to like 60C or so, and that's the upper limit of their functionality
  • Varine Varine:
Although I don't know if I need to actually actively heat it or just let the plate and hotend bring the ambient temp to whatever it will, but even then I need to figure out an exfiltration for hot air. I think I kind of know what to do but it's still fucking confusing
  • The Helper The Helper:
Maybe you could find some of that information from AC tech - like how they detect freon and such
  • Varine Varine:
That's mostly what I've been looking at
  • Varine Varine:
I don't think I'm dealing with quite the same pressures though, at the very least its a significantly smaller system. For the time being I'm just going to put together a quick scrubby box though and hope it works good enough to not make my house toxic
  • Varine Varine:
I mean I don't use this enough to pose any significant danger I don't think, but I would still rather not be throwing styrene all over the air

I bitch about Xenforo sometimes but it really is full featured you just have to really know what you are doing to get the most out of it.
  • The Helper The Helper:
It is just not easy to fix styles and customize but it definitely can be done
  • The Helper The Helper:
I do know this - xenforo dropped the ball by not keeping the vbulletin reputation comments as a feature. The loss of the Reputation comments data when we switched to Xenforo really was the death knell for the site when it came to all the users that left. I know I missed it so much and I got way less interested in the site when that feature was gone and I run the site.
