If you struggle to lose weight or to say no to an extra helping of pud, don’t blame your willpower - blame your parents.

A person’s attitude towards food and exercise is largely set by the tender age of ten, a study found.

Newcastle University researcher Heather Brown said that healthy eating habits become engrained in childhood and that is the time for parents, schools and governments to intervene.

Her advice follows study of data on hundreds of pairs of American siblings. Some were adults who lived apart from each other, others were aged between 10 and 18 and still living in the family home.

The data was filtered to separate out the effects of influences that don’t change over time, such as genetics and upbringing, and those that are more variable, such as the friends that we keep.

My mom always made me eat my entire plate because I was skinny and wouldn't eat it all. Now I'm 270lbs @ 16 years old. Thanks mom. I actually noticed this two years ago, but the study just proves it for me.

You should join a sport or something, you'll probably lose 70 pounds just over a few months

I take power walking and frisbee in school (our PE is a quarter long of the same activity that you can "choose") which is 200 minutes a week. I also take Krav Maga (self-defense classes) 1-2 times a week for an hour each time.

Err..
I eat only when I have to (hungry).

Funny thing is, I remember being force-fed my entire life..
I must be a statistical anomally.

I'm starting to think that the study was a little angled, though.

When I was ten, I was a little overweight and ate like that giant black hole in the center of the universe that sucks everything up, so... that's just fab.

I just totally disagree with this article. Maybe it is "fixed" for a few years, but eventually the kids end up making their own choices a bit. Especially many when kids start to cook their own food even in college apartments especially. I remember cooking food changed what I made/ate a lot.

Not true for me.
I didnt care about how much i eat or weight until i was like 16.
Ten years old i think i was eating everything back then, everything i could get. Was pretty lazy as well.

Now i am rather skinny, or at least i was 2 years ago, my girlfriend is feeding me way too much...
