General Owners of the Costa Concordia are offering survivors of the crash a 30% discount

The owners of the Costa Concordia are offering survivors of the disaster a 30 per cent discount off future cruises as they battle to stave off law suits expected to cost hundreds of millions of pounds.

One British survivor of the disaster, which claimed 12 lives with 20 people still missing, branded the offer as "insulting".

It was disclosed that in an attempt to help survivors the ship's parent company, Carnival, has been telephoning passengers daily asking if they are suffering nightmares or sleepless nights.

But that move also appeared to backfire when a psychologist said such questioning could trigger post traumatic stress rather than relieve it.

And "Captain Coward" deserves time for dereliction of duty and manslaughter.

So the people who didn't survive don't get anything? Thats so remorseful to the ones who just died. (Implicit sarcasm is implicit.)

Anyways, I know its a big deal and all but statistically at least a few boats must go down every now and then. If boat companies were sued for HUGE lawsuits that'd only increase the safety problems.

But in my opinion many cruise type line boating companies often take advantage of customers cause they know they can since they are big money. For instance Royal Carribean which can actually switch locations for trips that have multiple stop points as long as the starting and ending points are still the same. The real issue is that they don't let you switch cruises if something bad happens booking wise since you realize none of the dates align without a lot of complaining and then they sometimes might not even let you switch.

I found out that this was pretty similar to the titanic, with around 4200 people on board including crew they had about the same amount of people on board but this disaster claimed a lot fewer lives, too bad it didnt have the captain the Titanic did

To be honest that's just media hyperbole. Whereas the Titanic went down in the North Atlantic many hundreds of miles from shore after striking an iceberg, this vessel went down a mere 400 meters from shore after hitting a reef in the Mediterranean. I believe the death toll stands at around 12 at the moment with another 20 unaccounted for, which I won't deny is tragic, but comparing it to Titanic is a bit of a stretch.

Where do they expect this money to come from? This was tragic, and I sympathize. But I can't ration out the drive to sue the company for hundreds of thousands.

That money goes towards a new boat and paying for the higher insurance rate

Those ships cost hundreds of millions of dollars to build. I wouldn't really give a shit about 12 people dying either in an event like this.

The Titanic also didn't have things like helicopters to come get them with GPS coordinates of their position. I really don't understand how anyone actually died, save for someone being a total moron, either. Does anyone know what happened to them?

I don't understand why they would give out 30% coupons... I would expect something along the lines of "free". Anything else is insulting.
