CRANSTON, R.I. (CBS Connecticut/AP) — A Rhode Island judge says he imposed a lifetime driving ban on a 17-year-old boy after a serious car accident because he wanted to send a message about reckless driving.

Judge William Guglietta revoked Lyle Topa’s license for the rest of his life on Tuesday in connection with the Oct. 23 crash in Charlestown. Topa and three other Chariho High School students were injured when their car crashed into a tree. One passenger was in a coma for weeks. Topa was driving with a suspended license at the time of the accident, according to The Westerly Sun.

Guglietta said Thursday that Rhode Island’s roads are “littered with broken dreams and broken futures” and it’s time for authorities to get serious about dangerous driving.

This article is really vague. It sounds like the Judge is being unfair, but what was the situation? Was the kid going 90 mph in a residential, while DUI? Yes, he had a suspended license, but still...

Why is this possible, while repeat DUI's are still on the road?

What happened to no unfair punishment?

Either if this was allowed (well, it was) it won't do a single thing. Only person it affects heavily is the kid with the forever suspended license. No one else gives a crap. No one else 'learned a lesson.' Take a look at DUI's. We've all heard of them, and MANY still drink and drive. Hell, even those that have one become repeat offenders. There's no budget to put them all behind bars. It's nearly impossible to bar them all from driving until we install finger print detectors on every car ignition and steering wheel.

I read the article. I saw this. Was he going 90mph in a 25mph zone, or 45 in a 45? Was he DUI? There are lots of unanswered questions.

The tree did a sneak attack and suddenly popped up in front of the car.

He drove into a tree with too many passengers and a suspended license. Yes, he should lose his driving privilege.

Permanently? Three passengers in a car is not too many, if the car has a back-seat (here again, the article is vague, so who knows).

Topa, who was not wearing a seat belt, was racing another car and driving more than 20 miles per hour over the speed limit when he hit a tree

The impact wrecked his car and put him and his three passengers in hospital. One friend, 16-year-old John LaMotte was in a coma for weeks.

Brian Thweatt, 15, was also seriously injured, while Grover Champlin, 15, was the only one wearing a seat belt and escaped relatively unscathed.

Topa was driving with a suspended license at the time of the accident, which occurred after they had been at a gathering where there was alcohol..

Well, at least 6-8 years without a licence.

If the car in the picture really is the car with which they drove i can hardly imagine how they came out all alive.

It was the car he was driving.
Well, they were incredibly lucky that they survived. That's for sure !

Thanks for finding the alternate source, do you happen to have a link to it?

I suspected the situation was as much, I just think that the source in the first post was being biased by not including the detail it should have. He really did tear that car into pieces..

How can you tell the difference between real traffic and indexing or AI generation bots?
  • The Helper The Helper:
The bots will show up as users online in the forum software but they do not show up in my stats tracking. I am sure there are bots in the stats but the way alot of the bots treat the site do not show up on the stats
  • Varine Varine:
I want to build a filtration system for my 3d printer, and that shit is so much more complicated than I thought it would be
  • Varine Varine:
Apparently ABS emits styrene particulates which can be like .2 micrometers, which idk if the VOC detectors I have can even catch that
  • Varine Varine:
Anyway I need to get some of those sensors and two air pressure sensors installed before an after the filters, which I need to figure out how to calculate the necessary pressure for and I have yet to find anything that tells me how to actually do that, just the cfm ratings
  • Varine Varine:
And then I have to set up an arduino board to read those sensors, which I also don't know very much about but I have a whole bunch of crash course things for that
  • Varine Varine:
These sensors are also a lot more than I thought they would be. Like 5 to 10 each, idk why but I assumed they would be like 2 dollars
  • Varine Varine:
Another issue I'm learning is that a lot of the air quality sensors don't work at very high ambient temperatures. I'm planning on heating this enclosure to like 60C or so, and that's the upper limit of their functionality
  • Varine Varine:
Although I don't know if I need to actually actively heat it or just let the plate and hotend bring the ambient temp to whatever it will, but even then I need to figure out an exfiltration for hot air. I think I kind of know what to do but it's still fucking confusing
  • The Helper The Helper:
Maybe you could find some of that information from AC tech - like how they detect freon and such
  • Varine Varine:
That's mostly what I've been looking at
  • Varine Varine:
I don't think I'm dealing with quite the same pressures though, at the very least its a significantly smaller system. For the time being I'm just going to put together a quick scrubby box though and hope it works good enough to not make my house toxic
  • Varine Varine:
I mean I don't use this enough to pose any significant danger I don't think, but I would still rather not be throwing styrene all over the air

I bitch about Xenforo sometimes but it really is full featured you just have to really know what you are doing to get the most out of it.
  • The Helper The Helper:
It is just not easy to fix styles and customize but it definitely can be done
  • The Helper The Helper:
I do know this - xenforo dropped the ball by not keeping the vbulletin reputation comments as a feature. The loss of the Reputation comments data when we switched to Xenforo really was the death knell for the site when it came to all the users that left. I know I missed it so much and I got way less interested in the site when that feature was gone and I run the site.
