Apparently not content with the 1024 x 768 resolution on its 5-inch Optimus Vu, LG is working on a 5-inch 1080p smartphone display for the second half of 2012.

The 1920 x 1080 touchscreen offers a wonderfully excessive pixel density of 440 ppi, which is 72 percent more pixels per inch than the Optimus Vu, and a third more than the display on the iPhone 4S.

Unlike the display on LG’s current 5-inch phone, the new screen will have the same 16:9 widescreen aspect ratio as the HDTV in your living room.

The display technology is the same IPS-based LCD that LG has offered in recent devices like the Nitro HD and aforementioned Optimus Vu, but with the added benefit of many, many more pixels. If you're eager to get an early look at the display, you can catch it at SID 2012 Display Week in Boston starting June 4th.

That's a sweet resolution, I'm hoping Apple opts for a 4.1 inch 1440x960 display (422 PPI) in the next iPhone.

It enables the possibility of having future smartphones with high pixel density. It will make everything look way more sharper than your current, blurry smartphone.

And it doesn't matter if your phone is Android OS or iOS, all may get the screen pixel density upgrade.

Holy shit that Vu phone is one of the ugliest I've seen recently. I agree, it's kind of pointless going past as many pixels as the human eye can see, isn't it? It's just needless stress on the already not-so-well performing mobile video cards.

The human eye can see way more pixels than 1080p

Not in such a condensed space it can't.
"The screen is marketed by Apple as the "Retina Display", based on the assertion that a display of approximately 300 ppi at a distance of 12 inches (305 mm) from one's eye, or 57 arcseconds per pixel[42] is the maximum amount of detail that the human retina can perceive"

So..
From now on, pixel-density is to screens as megapixel is to cameras!

Or are these targeted at visual-philes (the cousin of the audiophile).

Viewing distance and visual acuity varies from person to person, on top of that, there are still other benefits such as less aliasing in games.

That really depends. Yes it depends on the person but take a look at this link: http://hugofdestruction.deviantart.com/journal/Your-Eye-s-quot-megapixel-quot-Resolution-214149706

the human eye can see quite a high resolution, since the way it works is only a very small field of vision (think like 2º or so) has high detail viewing power, and everything else is more or less side-vision, that catches less details

besides that, natively having a 1080p display means it would be very easy to feed that resolution to a HDTV via a hdmi cable - no up-scaling or anything involved

now if only they could style the phone a bit more.. oh well, il take any step forward that I can get

2^o = 1 ?
1 what? =x

That HDTV argument does sound pretty convincing.. That is, if people really do that.
