The Hive

The Hive is all the sections of the Helper.net without the General Discussion stuff multiplied by 1000. They have (had) tons more users than us. The Hive, if I remember right, inherited all the content of w3srch or whatever that was. We also share two of there Administrators - Ghan being our main admin. We used to compete with them back in the Days of World Editor Greatness but they did much better on the hosted maps and project forums than we did. We had the World Editor Maps section on World Editor Help but that was never really integrated into the forum as it was a SDRyoko hack so we just never could get there. The two sites are affiliated and I used to have a Moderators login there thanks to Ghan. I haven't checked if that works in years and really have not thought the Hive in a while. Anybody have an update on these guys?

I remember back in the old days the Hive was being hosted on the owners own Cable connection - he had a fast one. He was in jeopardy of losing the connection so we were trying to see if we could them on our dedicated server at the time. We figured we could barely do it. We would have hosted them too if they went down. The site is/was a great resource. The scale of it though. It had so many users.....

I use The Hive a lot and got some information. Dunno if you can use it.

As of writing this there are 1845 users (including guests) online.
New maps, models (unit and effects), icons, skins, and spell triggers are uploaded/updated almost daily.
Many of the forums get's new threads every day.
So I would say it is both very active still, and still a great resource hub.

Quite some time ago (can't remember exactly when, a year maybe) some of the crazy good modelers left the site, I have been trying to find out why but to no avail. Supposedly disagreement between the management and said modelers (at least one has returned).
Still tons of great models are hosted there.

Sorry for the bit of necro...

I used to be a moderator at the Hive, and I am currently active, although I tend to disappear for months at a time since stepping down from staff.

As per your question, the Hive is currently in a strange place. There is still a core modding community, although I would doubt it is anything of its former self. It seems like South East Asia seems to be providing a lot of new users and is a large force in the modding community these days. Europe used to be the power house, and is still present, but dwindling.

The terrain community, which has always been my home, has revitilized and is going strong right now. A contest just finished in fact (waiting on judging results from my collogue). Speaking of, the Arena (Hive hosted contests) is going very strong.

Hive 2.0 (the new site) has been revealed by Ralle (owner) and is slated to come out later this year or next (I think).

Outside of the modding, there is a larger community of people who used to mod and have now simply stayed for the site. I am one of these. I always enjoy being a part of a forum community, and since I have spent over 5 years at the Hive, I have made it my home. I spend most of my time in non-wc3 related sections. This is a common trend.

Anyhow, there's a little update for you, and probably more information about me than you needed. I really love this history of The Helper. I am pretty sure I used to come here (it had a different layout?!) and I was interested to see Ghans section and others that crossover into the Hive.

  • No one is chatting at the moment.

How can you tell the difference between real traffic and indexing or AI generation bots?
  • The Helper The Helper:
The bots will show up as users online in the forum software but they do not show up in my stats tracking. I am sure there are bots in the stats but the way alot of the bots treat the site do not show up on the stats
  • Varine Varine:
I want to build a filtration system for my 3d printer, and that shit is so much more complicated than I thought it would be
  • Varine Varine:
Apparently ABS emits styrene particulates which can be like .2 micrometers, which idk if the VOC detectors I have can even catch that
  • Varine Varine:
Anyway I need to get some of those sensors and two air pressure sensors installed before an after the filters, which I need to figure out how to calculate the necessary pressure for and I have yet to find anything that tells me how to actually do that, just the cfm ratings
  • Varine Varine:
And then I have to set up an arduino board to read those sensors, which I also don't know very much about but I have a whole bunch of crash course things for that
  • Varine Varine:
These sensors are also a lot more than I thought they would be. Like 5 to 10 each, idk why but I assumed they would be like 2 dollars
  • Varine Varine:
Another issue I'm learning is that a lot of the air quality sensors don't work at very high ambient temperatures. I'm planning on heating this enclosure to like 60C or so, and that's the upper limit of their functionality
  • Varine Varine:
Although I don't know if I need to actually actively heat it or just let the plate and hotend bring the ambient temp to whatever it will, but even then I need to figure out an exfiltration for hot air. I think I kind of know what to do but it's still fucking confusing
  • The Helper The Helper:
Maybe you could find some of that information from AC tech - like how they detect freon and such
  • Varine Varine:
That's mostly what I've been looking at
  • Varine Varine:
I don't think I'm dealing with quite the same pressures though, at the very least its a significantly smaller system. For the time being I'm just going to put together a quick scrubby box though and hope it works good enough to not make my house toxic
  • Varine Varine:
I mean I don't use this enough to pose any significant danger I don't think, but I would still rather not be throwing styrene all over the air

Another bot invasion 493 members online most of them bots that do not show up on stats
  • Varine Varine:
I'm looking at a solid 378 guests, but 3 members. Of which two are me and VSNES. The third is unlisted, which makes me think its a ghost.

I bitch about Xenforo sometimes but it really is full featured you just have to really know what you are doing to get the most out of it.
  • The Helper The Helper:
It is just not easy to fix styles and customize but it definitely can be done
  • The Helper The Helper:
I do know this - xenforo dropped the ball by not keeping the vbulletin reputation comments as a feature. The loss of the Reputation comments data when we switched to Xenforo really was the death knell for the site when it came to all the users that left. I know I missed it so much and I got way less interested in the site when that feature was gone and I run the site.
