One of the biggest changes in the tourism industry in the last decade is the influx of Chinese travelers. According to theWall Street Journal, China’s rising middle class led to 100 million citizens traveling abroad in 2014 with 234 million expected to visit others parts of the world by 2020, spending $422 billion.

So tourist destinations are going to great lengths to make sure their infrastructure is as friendly to Chinese travelers as possible. That’s why, for the first half of May, the cities of Rome and Milan participated in an unusual experiment: they put Chinese police officers on their streets, Sylvia Poggioli reports at NPR.

According to Jim Yardley atthe New York Times, three million Chinese tourists visit Italy per year, drawn by the romance of the Trevi Fountain, the Coliseum and pasta carbonara. But the recent terrorist attacks in Paris and Brussels have travelers nervous about visiting Europe. Pickpockets and petty criminals have also targeted Chinese travelers who tend to carry large amounts of cash. Often, because of cultural and language divides, Chinese visitors have difficulty finding help after an incident.

That’s why China sent four officers to Italy with two-person squads accompanied by Italian officers patrolling tourist areas in Milan and the Eternal City. The officers do not have the power of arrest, but could refer problems to their Italian counterparts.

Sounds a bit odd.
It actually makes sense on an international level.

Think about how Chinese tourists are very unpredictable and was known for being impolite. With Chinese officers nearby, they can help and assist the Chinese tourists to behave and reduce overall impoliteness towards Italian culture.

Yeah, and they can carry out the death sentence given for tarnishing the chinese image to the outside world immediately and on the spot.

Language is often a barrier when dealing with police in a foreign country. The Chinese accent is notoriously hard to decipher too. I think this is a step in the right direction, that deserves similar implementations globally.

Although I do wonder if the presence of familiar people would just make the tourists feel even more comfortable with their brashness, which would actually make things worse.

I have never seen any impolite asian people around here. They are always super timid, like little puppy dogs.

The Japanese tourists are kind of annoying sometimes. It's fun to watch them take pictures though.

Acc, what tourists? I thought you lived in some third world Europe. No one wants to go there.

Tourists? There is plenty of asian people at my university. You can see them all the time, especially if you are a TA. I have to deal with all kinds of people from all kinds of countries. But the asian ones are super timid. They dont even dare to ask any questions. They rather go to the wrong classes or miss deadlines before they would ask a question. Its sad, really. Well it would be sad if I gave a damn.

I dont know about that. Maybe we have a different definition of respect.

Ah, yes, we do.

For us, respect is more about saving face. Therefore, they would rather miss out on things than to think they are being ridiculed over something, even trivial things.

I would prefer if they would not waste our (and their) time, space and time. Respect is not about acting like an idiot and expecting others to not point it out. Or maybe I got that mixed up.

That's because they're afraid if they misbehave, they'll get turned into vampires. Or get robbed by a bubble gum gang or whatever they do over there.
