Does amplifying a mp3 file ruin the quality?

if you use a program to amplify an audio file, does doing so ruin the sound? : s

It will probably amplify the flaws in the file as well.

Yes and no.

Yes, because MP3 is a lossy compression format. Every time you save it, you lose some quality due to quantification.

No, because some applications like MP3Gain provide a way to alter the amplification factor. This transformation is lossless but limited to multiples of about +/- 1.5dB if I'm not mistaken.

i did make a copy and try, i just cant really tell ><
well what about saving in wav?

Of course not, unless you reduce the bitrate. Just like JPEG files, you won't see any noticeable differences. It's only after repeatedly saving (thus recompressing) the file that you'll see (or, in this case, hear) differences.

well what about saving in wav?
PCM is lossless, but requires quite a lot of disk space. You'll lose quality again, when converting back to MP3.
