Because if the kangaroo was just gonna keep going at the same pace he was, he wouldnt make any ground on the hunters, but still get tired. If he used whatever energy was left to sprint he could lose them.

Have you ever tried to creep up to a sleeping animal, only to have it wake up when you get close? Thats what happened.

As Arcane mentioned before, the dialog is sounds a bit childish, and saying the spells aloud doesn't help much either.
But i liked it. It was an interesting read but i wouldn't read much more then a short story of this type.
