An ongoing series by George R. R. Martin and currently my favorite series. Four books have been written out of the predicted seven, A Dance with Dragons is currently being worked on.

The ones out by now are:

A Game of Thrones
A Clash of Kings
A Storm of Swords
A Feast for Crows

The series (very basically) takes you through a civil war in Westeros. The author uses multiple viewpoint characters to tell the story from all sides, and is especially good and creating shades of grey in place of the clear black and white in some fantasies. There is almost always someone on the "enemy" side whom you follow and sympathize with, no one side is defined as "evil".

Another thing I really really like about the series is that the author is brutally realistic in his telling. War is supposed to be bloody and cruel and filled with death, betray, and deceit, stupid things do happen, and he leaves out none of it. What hits a reader really hard, what hit me really hard, especially when it's the first time (though it doesn't get any better) is his tendency to kill off some apparently "main" characters. He doesn't do the kind of BS story where the main characters always prevail, and you know they won't die. After the initial shocks, you're always on the edge of your seat, because you know that anyone can die, even those characters you've followed through pages and pages of the series.

Each book is pretty damn long, over seven hundred pages (and the versions I read were pretty big books), but they're well worth the read. Try it, you won't be disappointed.

Sounds interesting. Is it a fantasy type world, or more based in reality (humans rather than elves and whatnot)?

This actually sounds pretty good, how would you compare his writing style to other writers?

It's fantasy, but the only sentient race so far is humans, and well the Others and the children of the forest if they count, they haven't had much screen time yet. There's not a lot of magic in it either, at least it's not obvious like "look there's a mage!". There are hints of magic and mystery, but no one actually throws a fireball or casts a spell or something. It's something more subtle, not "in-your-face" magic.

Yes, you should get attached to a couple of characters. He's killed off... one... two... main characters I really loved and a couple more including minor ones that I liked and mourned for regardless.

As for writing style... not quite sure how to answer that.

George Martin actually wrote the biggest political fantasy yet. He took the mini-genre a whole step forward.

One thing Arcane forgot to mention is that the books (especially the first ones) follow nobles. Lords and Ladies are the main characters of the book. Each one with his/her own interests and difficulties.

I too strongly suggest the books. There is not much other to be said. Search for reviews, I'm sure you'll find some good ones.

I'm just reading it :O
And it's good and everything is fine

but

I have to make a presentation about it in school :>
And with all those characters it gets complicated as hell :(

But at least I dont have to read such old boring books like most of my class

Just got the first one yesterday. I wasn't expecting kickass out of it. I guess I should. Only on page 31 so things haven't heated up quiet so.

I'm on the second book, and I got to say it's been awesome. I can't help myself but skip the Dae chapters though. They're not very interesting, nor are the Bron ones.

How can you tell the difference between real traffic and indexing or AI generation bots?
  • The Helper The Helper:
The bots will show up as users online in the forum software but they do not show up in my stats tracking. I am sure there are bots in the stats but the way alot of the bots treat the site do not show up on the stats
  • Varine Varine:
I want to build a filtration system for my 3d printer, and that shit is so much more complicated than I thought it would be
  • Varine Varine:
Apparently ABS emits styrene particulates which can be like .2 micrometers, which idk if the VOC detectors I have can even catch that
  • Varine Varine:
Anyway I need to get some of those sensors and two air pressure sensors installed before an after the filters, which I need to figure out how to calculate the necessary pressure for and I have yet to find anything that tells me how to actually do that, just the cfm ratings
  • Varine Varine:
And then I have to set up an arduino board to read those sensors, which I also don't know very much about but I have a whole bunch of crash course things for that
  • Varine Varine:
These sensors are also a lot more than I thought they would be. Like 5 to 10 each, idk why but I assumed they would be like 2 dollars
  • Varine Varine:
Another issue I'm learning is that a lot of the air quality sensors don't work at very high ambient temperatures. I'm planning on heating this enclosure to like 60C or so, and that's the upper limit of their functionality
  • Varine Varine:
Although I don't know if I need to actually actively heat it or just let the plate and hotend bring the ambient temp to whatever it will, but even then I need to figure out an exfiltration for hot air. I think I kind of know what to do but it's still fucking confusing
  • The Helper The Helper:
Maybe you could find some of that information from AC tech - like how they detect freon and such
  • Varine Varine:
That's mostly what I've been looking at
  • Varine Varine:
I don't think I'm dealing with quite the same pressures though, at the very least its a significantly smaller system. For the time being I'm just going to put together a quick scrubby box though and hope it works good enough to not make my house toxic
  • Varine Varine:
I mean I don't use this enough to pose any significant danger I don't think, but I would still rather not be throwing styrene all over the air

I bitch about Xenforo sometimes but it really is full featured you just have to really know what you are doing to get the most out of it.
  • The Helper The Helper:
It is just not easy to fix styles and customize but it definitely can be done
  • The Helper The Helper:
I do know this - xenforo dropped the ball by not keeping the vbulletin reputation comments as a feature. The loss of the Reputation comments data when we switched to Xenforo really was the death knell for the site when it came to all the users that left. I know I missed it so much and I got way less interested in the site when that feature was gone and I run the site.
