Active NUON users

Hi everyone,

Since there isn't a heck of a lot of activity here, I thought I'd ask this question. How many active NUON users are out there anymore? It seems like it is pretty dead. :(

That makes me wonder, is the lack of new games because of the lack of activity, or is the lack of activity because of the lack of new games? Or is the lack of activity because everyone is busy playing T3K? :D

I wish I could play T3K but can't find it. I am active though, hand raised here boss.

Depends on what you mean by active I guess. I actively think about it pretty often, but I haven't actually played a NUON game in a long time. Unless you count the Freefall remake on XBox. I just played that this morning.

Apart from the video blog I haven't done much NUON related. And I'm tired of hearing myself say "I'll get back into it soon." :)

So...er...I'll get back into it...eventually.

Active in that I still update the site, but I don't play my NUON much these days. New games are the lifeblood of any system, and with a userbase as small as the NUON has, even when new games do come out there is not much "visible" activity on the forums, etc.

I do still get tons of hits when new versions of the emulator come out, so people are interested in that for sure.

Well, at least I generated some activity here. :)

Yeah, the user base is something I'm trying to get a feel for. It seems like NUON would be the perfect console for new developers to get their feet wet with, but I guess the active user base is too small to even make it tempting to develop for it.

I wonder how many working N501s are out there.

One thing is for sure, I'd love to bring back my newsletter. I published all of four issues in 2004. But now there doesn't really seem to be anything to write about.

I guess the one thing that is confusing me is, if people can still develop and sell games for Jaguar, why can't they do the same for NUON?

Oh well. Maybe it's time I learn to program. :p

Well, some of us are still questing. I still need a copy of Tempest 3000. I get that and my NUON might get worn out period!<3

Hi all, first time post, though I have been lurking around for about a year. I still get the Nuon out occasionally, but it is the lack of games that means it doesn't get used as much as it should (that said I'm still missing quite a few, would love to get my mits on Iron Soldier some day). I've also stopped watching movies on it as I'm afraid it'll die on me. I have added a rather lacklustre Nuon page to my gaming website Zogging Hell (http://www.zhell.co.uk/nuon.html), which at some stage I'm hoping to improve dramatically, but I'm having trouble finding time to update the site in general!

T2KFreeker,

Good luck finding T3K. I hope your NUON can handle it when you do find it. :D In the mean time, I have a much higher quality version of my T3K video review on my site now (I'll be posting a separate post about it in a moment), you can at least pretend you're playing it. :)

ThomasW,

Welcome aboard! This is the most active community out there. Not saying much, I know. That's a nice start for your site. It's always good to see another NUON site on the web. Good luck with it, I know how hard it it to find time to write quality content.

I had an ID on the old ND forums, still visit these every few weeks (hoping for some action!), and still watch movies and play some 2-player IS3 and Merlin Racing with the family here and there on the 501.

I know I have a sealed copy in storage somewhere. I will hunt for it. Maybe it'll motivate me to put up all my extra Nuon gear. I have a few sealed games and Stealth ADV controllers.

Hi Jim,

That's good to hear. I stopped watching movies on the N501. It never seemed like a very good DVD player, too sluggish.

Counting myself, that makes six active users so far. (Active users being those who check this forum. I guess it doesn't matter if you actively play it. The same few games to get boring after a while.) Wow! That's a lot! :D

Next, I'll have to find out how many active LaserActive users there are out there. I'm sure the active user base could compete at this point. :)

I guess I should admit it too, I haven't used my NUON in a few months as well. It's been in storage while I'm doing some cleaning and rearranging. ANd my style of cleaning and rearranging takes years. :p

By the way Kevin, What ever happened to the old NUON-Dome forum anyway?

I'd have to argue against the point of NUON being perfect for new developers. The public SDK is too restricting without any way to test code without burning a CD. And a multi-core processor (from what I understand at least - I'm no programmer) is no easy beast to tame.

I guess the one thing that is confusing me is, if people can still develop and sell games for Jaguar, why can't they do the same for NUON?
Despite both systems being considered failures, the Jaguar userbase is still exponentially larger than that of the NUON. I mean, NUON was barely ever sold in brick-and-mortar retail stores, with the only chain of note that carried them being Best Buy.

Not to mention the fact that we still don't have the encryption key for NUON DVDs, leaving the homebrew developers an even more fragmented userbase - only N501's basically will be able to play the games.

Cool, always good to see some new NUON activity on the web - it's a rarity these days. Good luck with the site.

They were hosted via VisualCues which just up and disappeared one day, and I could never get a hold of Chile to sort things out. The Helper was kind enough to hook me up with a spot on his forums (he graciously hosts the site for free as well) so this has been home for the N-D forums since then.

The plan was to get this sub-forum skinned like the old N-D forums but it just never came to pass. I'd like to still see it happen someday but with the activity as low as it is here, it's hard to press the issue ;)

Good to see NUONica back too. Hopefully it sticks around for good this time!

You're probably right, and that is a good point. You can't just plug NUON into the PC to test the code. That would be cool. As for programming the multi-core processor, I just assumed where you could program it in C, it would be fairly easy, though you won't get peak performance this way.

More very good points. I've been starting to get the picture, after I posted my original comments, that anyone trying to sell a new NUON game might expect to sell about 5 copies.

VisualCues, yeah, I remember that name. Very Interesting, I didn't know they just disappeared like that. At least things seem to be working well now for you now.

Yeah, I'm happy to have NUONica back again, and it is the plan for it to stay for good too. :D I'm even thinking about bringing back my newsletter, NUON Notes. Though, if I bring it back, it will be in a different form. I want to merge it with my old AtariNews Newsletter, and maybe add a few other abandoned systems into it as well. But first, my site needs some content.

Ahem! 6 now :p

Anywho, I check N-D on a weekly basis, but don't really have anything to post about. I just recently got in to the NUON and have a 501, but I unfortunately don't have much time to play it. I have a Jag, too, so if I play a version of Tempest, it's the Jag version, since I'm nowhere near finished with it yet :D

I have played a little merlin racing with my sis, though and we both enjoyed that.

Excellent, you and AndreasB makes 7 copies. :D Let's start production!

No matter what, it's good to see some activity here.

I still lurk, and my N501 is hooked up for the occasional game of T3K (and Breakout :) )

If you want to get into coding, let me know. I can send you some demo code and offer a few tips.

Hi Stephen,

Another name I remember from way back when. :) Glad to see so many still hanging around. Well, that makes 8 copies!

I've been dabbling with the idea of getting into programming. I'd love to write something for NUON myself, and some other platforms as well. Demo code, etc, would be great.

That being said, I won't be doing anything with it until at least next year. I put on large Halloween and Christmas displays, and that will be eating up most of my free time from now until next year.

I stil use my nuon as my DVD player, and I need to see a movie in order to get to sleep so I use my nuon every day... but not for gaming....

Up and there I'm comming here, and if they news I relay them in to France, ... I also have one of the biggest nuon collection in France for what it is worth it... :D

Write me at [email protected] title it Nuon.

Well, I HAVE a Nuon. LOL The only thing I like about it is Merlin Racing. Aside from that, Tempest 3K is still no match for the Jaguar's Tempest 2K. Space Invaders is fun. Iron Soldier 3 is ok.

Saddened my two attempts at Tetris fell through (buying the Toshiba system too late to turn in the card for the game, and then an ebay auction that got lost in the mail.)

Still have my Nuon.. not sure what to think of it. But it made a great first DVD player.

Hi all,
I use my N505's only as DVD players and occasionally for the VLM.

My development interest died after using a big pile of CD-R's and
a whole heap of time... I needed something better than burning
a CD-R every time I wanted to test some code - too wasteful in
terms of time and money. I was promised an old devkit from a
former developer, but it never happened, so I gave up the task.

If I had time, I can get 90% of the same results from the Jaguar
I think, because with homebrew on the NUON too much is barred.

I have an N501, but it doesn't output RGB so it's fairly unfriendly
to use for me in Europe, and along with the controllers I have,
and the few games, it sits unused in a box. I may sell it soon.
I'd have been more encouraged if I could have found an N504.

So there you are. Still interested, but only as an end-user now.
Richard / JustClaws.
