Doctor claims symptoms can have routine causes that are ignored due to knee-jerk diagnosis
After 50 years in practice Dr Saul says there is no such thing as ADHD Improving your diet, exercising and sleeping more can alleviate symptoms

Distracted, fidgeting and squirming in his seat, the 13-year-old boy in my consulting room was exhibiting all the classic signs of an attention disorder. His desperate mother hoped that I could do something for her son, who had become sluggish and unfocused at school, did not seem to care that his academic performance was declining, and claimed to feel 'too tired' for sport, which he used to enjoy.

He had been diagnosed with ADHD - Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder - and been taking medication for a year but, to the despair of his teachers and mother, his behaviour had not improved at all.

I was not at all surprised. Why? Because, after 50 years of practising medicine and seeing thousands of patients demonstrating symptoms of ADHD, I have reached the conclusion there is no such thing as ADHD.

I agree as well. In my experience, ADHD is a convenient excuse to explain away laziness and a lack of initiative in late teens, and a quick-fix for parents who don't have the patience/don't want to deal with their slightly-more-energetic-than-usual kids.

I think you need to remember that it is not parents nor people with ADHD who decide if they or their child has the disorder. Neither are they the ones who prescribe medication.
It's the doctor.
Parents may try to push for the diagnosis but in the end it's the doctor who decides.

Eh? That's good to know. I always thought it was a mistake to label children so fast anyway...

Well it's still only one doctor's opinion.
Though I have also been thinking that ADHD is a label too many have been slapped on.
Bringing attention to the matter like Saul does here can only be good.

To treat ADHD as a condition, rather than a set of symptoms, is doing a terrible, and dangerous, disservice to the children and adults who are diagnosed with it.

But to lump them together and turn them into a diagnosis of ADHD, then to treat this so-called condition with stimulants, is like treating the symptoms of a heart attack - such as severe chest pain - with painkillers, rather than tackling the cause of them by repairing the heart. It is dangerous, neglectful and wrong.

so are you supposed to treat stuff as a condition or as symptoms? (I think he had a bad example here..)

and what makes you think that all doctors are 100% pure and free from the influence of their patients, obsessive parents, and big pharma all at the same time?

Nothing.
I was simply stating that the final call is the doctor's.

ADHD drugs are just time controlled speed - nuclear scientist speed - lol. They can make it release different amounts at different times to control the speed effect. If I had some of that stuff I bet I would be alot more productive at work. I have seen this condition though, where speed does not actually speed them up - it brings them down and downers and stuff bring them up. I dont think that is ADHD but it might be. They should continue studying it, imho but they should stop prescribing it so much because it really is legal time released super meth, what the meth heads would be making if they had billions of dollars to spend. just sayin
