All you ever wanted to know about config.sys (tweak that 95 and 98!)

okay, these settings will not completely change the windows experience, but in windows 95 and 98 you may see a noticeable increase (if anyone knows how to force ME to use your config.sys settings PLEASE let me know)

okay here is what a config.sys file should look like. (yours may be blank but just start edit.com and save it as c:/config.sys)

DEVICE=C:\WINDOWS\HIMEM.SYS
DEVICEHIGH=C:\WINDOWS\EMM386/EXE

(try these settings on the previous line, they save more ram but may not work on every system. You just need to put a space between each switch)
A=0 HIGHSCAN RAM

FILESHIGH=40
BUFFERSHIGH=8,0
FCBS=1
DOS=HIGH,UMB
STACKS=0,0

(STACKS=0,0 may not work on your system, if not set it to STACKS=9,256 or whatever is there when you open it)

LASTDRIVE=(set this to the letter past the last lettered drive on your system ie: if your last drive is E set it to F)


yours may be set up something like this, but remember to ALWAYS put HIMEM.SYS on the first line and make sure all DEVICE lines are changed to DEVICEHIGH

I will post other settings to this thread as I remember them. Also if these settings work for running the system, but not for certain games, I can tell you how to setup your config.sys for multiple configurations
