Annoying Computer Freezes

I have no idea what to do with this computer now. It just freezes for no particular reason at all. I am on the web and click the back button and it freezes, my brother is playing Everquest and it freezes, we click on a windows icon and it freezes. I have no idea what to do about this. I have tried scan disk, defragmentation, but they don't seem to work at all. Is there anything I can do to stop this problem? Right now I am searching for spyware and will remove all the spyware from my computer. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

My computer specs are as follows: Windows XP Home Edition, 384 MB RAM, 500 MHZ Pentium 3 processor, GeForce3 Ti Video Card.

First, right click My Computer > Properties > Advanced tab > Startup and Recovery button > uncheck "Automatically reboot." Also, check to see if there any odd alerts are in the event viewer.

Secondly, it may be a RAM or heat issue, too. Grab a memory tester from www.goldmemory.cz. Also, take the side of your case off and make sure all the fans are spinning, and leave the side off for a day or so, making sure to note whether or not the computer freezes.

one question

I have one question........is it a Compaq, i have nothing against compaq, but i work at Radio Shack, and we sell them. we get them back for repair all the time because of this problem. as far as suggestions go......xp on a p3 500? didnt know they made a p3 500.... i thought p3 was 700 and up... over heating is a big issue as was said before.

there were both p2 and p3 450's, my bro when he got his comp wanted to buy a p2 450, but the company couldn't offer him one coz intel re-called them and forced p3 450's on them, so he bought a K6-3 instead. He's got an xp1900 now anyway.

I found this book my mother bought when Windows XP Home Edition first came out to help her through the new OS. I decided to look through it and see if any information in it could help me with this annoying freezing problem. One section told me about computer errors and told me were I could go in Windows to find out what kind of error is happening on my computer, so I go to the place and found some error message dealing with IE. Here is the message that I found and it does relate to the problem because the computer only freezes when I am using the browser to surf the web and no other time does it freeze. Anyway, here is the message.

Faulting application explorer.exe, version 6.0.2600.0, faulting module unknown, version 0.0.0.0, fault address 0x00000000.

Thanks for all your replies and help so far, I hope I am giving you all enough information so you can help me out.

Good call.

Visit http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com and make sure you've got Internet Explorer and Windows patched.

If that doesn't work, you can also try repairing Internet Explorer.

Start > Run > Copy and paste this:

rundll32 setupwbv.dll,IE6Maintenance "C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\Setup\SETUP.EXE" /g "C:\WINDOWS\IE Uninstall Log.Txt"

Dabom,

I tried what you said with the updates and no updates were out of Internet Explorer that I did not already have. When I did copy and paste with the repair program it worked, but when the dialog box came up I couldn't check anything. So how can I get it to where I can check something? I saw the repair IE, but it wouldn't let me check it.

Yes they did make a P3 500, but it was using the old Katmai core, rather then the newer Cu-mine core using the integrated L2 cache... I would question whether a P3 500 is a bit low end for XP and gaming with it, but oh well...

A couple things Seigin,

- Do you have any documentation which indicates what system board came with that Compaq, or if we can know the model, it might be possible for us to look up on Compaq's site. They very well might have come out with a BIOS update since you bought your P3 500, and sometimes a BIOS update can helped with newer operating systems or certain updates.

- How old is this computer, and did this problem just occur suddenly or has it been happening, since for instance you put winXP on there?

I had an old Pentium 75 which suffered from a chipset which was going bad (degrading) which was the older i430FX chipset (had a few probs), and RAM that degraded. The combo resulted in a large number of crashes using Windows NT 4.0 (much older version of the system that is called Windows XP today) and in Windows 95 it became unuseable. Some of the memory tested bad, and even with it gone, the system board (memory controller specifically) was toast... I had to get a new system... I had many of the same symptoms you mention, along with rather unusual error messages such as the STOP 0x24 which because I had Service Pack 3, should not have been, in-page/parity errors, etc...

- Can you go into Control Panels, double click on "Administrative Tools" and then double click on "Event Viewer"

Once in there, do the following:

1. Select System
2. Click on the View menu and select Filter
3. Uncheck all but Error to begin with
4. Click on OK
5. If some errors and the Source (is a column you will see) is repetitive, report to us what it is

If an event ID and/or an error code is given, please indicate this along with where it is indicating the fault is... At a blue screen it might also report STOP 0x and some number, plz indicate what that is, where it's saying the error is comming from, the text you get. Microsoft has documentation which can allow us to look up the number given, to see what Microsoft has to say about that error code...

I recently read on a site about some error with IE and that to disable activeX in the security settings for it until a new patch for IE came out to fix that problem. I'll see if I can find the site again but other than that I do not think there was much else to say other than that.

Mayo also has vinegar. Vinegar is a very important part of it, it's effectively a delivery method FOR vinegar but hidden

It's a neat ingredient. But yeah it's eggs. But a LOT of people think eggs count as dairy because of the fucking food pyramid the US keeps trying to make a thing
  • Varine Varine:
I think on the new one they did change it, but idk. I don't really care whatever the government is doing right now because it's consistently absurd. Like what is RFK doing in charge of health anything? I love the bear story because WTF was that, but also, pretty much every time he talks it's WTF. Like even his voice sounds microwaved

The pyramid is fucking dumb as shit, no matter how you arrange it.
  • Varine Varine:
It's actually remarkably easy to make mayonnaise though. Fun fact, it USED to kind of be a French mother sauce. I believe that Careme considered it one, it may have been aioli but that has also built a different meaning than it used to. An aioli is just mayonnaise I mixed with other shit typically, I didn't start it don't come at me
  • Varine Varine:
It's very hard to do it on a large scale though
  • Varine Varine:
Depending on how you pour the oil the consistency can vary wildly, but that's true for most emulsions. I can only make about two quarts at a time with my robo coup, and if I have to make several in series because I forgot to order it becomes really obvious even when I do it. We have to wait and mix them all together to make sure we have the same thing.
  • Varine Varine:
Hollandaise is also kind of like that, emulsions require a very steady hand to do exactly the same every time.
  • Varine Varine:
Luckily I live in an age with electricity so it's way fucking faster, but when I was just a boy trying to find my place I had some hardcore chefs that made use do things like that by hand. It is WAY easier to get right by hand because you control it and can feel it, but it takes soooooo much longer. And on the scale a modern kitchen requires... I serve 400-500 guests on average per day right now, if I had 100 then we could do things way better
  • Varine Varine:
But we can't do that. In the winter yeah, but I HAVE to get people through here right now so I can afford the staff that we CAN do that. We have about 100 days of summer, and if that summer doesn't make us what it will, then I can't operate the other most of the year with my staff. The owner is talking about closing two days a week to cut down on labor, I told him he should cut down on vacations and it did not go great. I do think I won though, I have to keep my fucking core staff and they have to be gainfully employed
  • Varine Varine:
Sure some of them might take a second job, but I can't just cut my entire staff to unlivable hours, nor can I can cut them off all winter if I want them to come back.
  • Varine Varine:
And also, there is no fucking way I'm pulling these hours come september. I only do this right now because I have to, the second I don't have to be the one doing it I won't be
  • Varine Varine:
I have a 5 person core staff in the kitchen, not including me or Chef Ben
  • Varine Varine:
Though two of those people are likely not making it this year. One of them has been replaced, the other I am kind of trying to. He's being a giant bitch, today I had to get onto him because in the three hours before I left he had taken like thirty minutes for cigarette breaks
  • Varine Varine:
And he was also complaining to me the other day that he was out of weed so couldn't smoke any before work that day, and was confused about why I was annoyed he was telling me, his boss, that he is smoking weed everyday before work.

Like yeah I can tell. I don't need to fucking know.
  • Varine Varine:
So now he's getting scrutinized and will not be top of the list. I know I don't have the smartest people but I do expect them to have some common fucking sense

I did do a rare thing for me and hire a girl last month without warning. Everyone was made at me because I started her at like 21, but she worked with me before and I was like don't care. She made 19 at her old job and I wanted her to come work with me, she is the best

  • Varine Varine:
I'm going to get her a raise at the end of the summer. She wants to go to school again, but I want her to still work with me so.... she kind of can just tell me what the price is. I can go to 25 if she keeps up. I need to get her onto line more, that's what she wants, but I need her where she is and it's not fair that she doesn't get the little bit of raise that comes with it. She can do it no problem, I've worked with her there.
  • Varine Varine:
It's just hard to move and train people unnecessarily right now. And also the line fucking sucks, it's not any more fun. This is turn and burn so I have the bankroll, and everyone suffers for it
  • Varine Varine:
Eventually we'll get it balanced, we'
  • Varine Varine:
we're starting online orders and stuff, but I also turn that off all the time because I barely keep up trying to be the best at Sysco shit
  • Varine Varine:
I think it's gonna be a good fall and winter though. We're going to have a good staff, they will get along, they will be able to manage the workload and the complications, they know how to really cook this year, like every person on line knows their steak temps. Some of them use thermometers a lot and they don't always use them right, but they do know how to do it. Failure, especially in this field, is the only way to get better. They'll get it
  • Varine Varine:
They won't get feel down while they do the thermometer, but we didn't have an instant read probe when I was learning. Like they did but god knows how off it is, you HAD to do it by feel. Even if the chef was fine with me bringing my own, it takes too long. Poke and know
