Yeah, from what I understand, a new law / regulation / whatever states that jailbreaking is legal, and that companies can't sue anyone whom jailbreaks, or develops jailbreaks.

If I ever find the article / new posts, I'll link 'em.

Well that's good news!

WHAT? I never knew that o_O

it is legal - you are using the device that you paid for to it's fullest, as opposed to being locked down and being told in what ways you can and can't use it - most of the time this voids the warranty (the link is for iphones, since those get the most attention, and are the only ones that the term "jailbreaking" really applies to, but it covers pretty much all devices, including DD-WRT/tomato on routers)

how else would you guys suggest attacking sony? in court has proven ineffective, and this hits them where it hurts (their customers, who will be angry at sony, since anon isn't a target that they can take their anger out on) - or are you the kind of person who would prefer to do nothing and let devices get locked down and less accessible?

You can't jailbreak it and then use it to cheat. You also will probably void your warranty but no one can really stop you.

I would suggest not attacking Sony. By these same standards, my company would be attacked for our security system we're using to protect our assets. What happened to their whole thing about nonviolence?

I'm actually happy this happened. This just goes to show you. If you mess with people and tell them what they can't do. It will be done. Sony had it coming to them. Now Sony just needs to let people do whatever they want and fix up your network.

what exactly are the benefits of jailbreaking a device such as the ps3
apart form being able to play illegal copies of games?

It's irrelevant.

The point is the consumer has every right to do what they want with their console. Sony can choose to refuse a service (PSN) because of what they do, but they can not take legal action against a consumer for doing a legal action with their legally owned product. Taking apart a PS3, despite popular belief, is legal. Geohot merely did that, and was sued by Sony.

Sony violated the legal rights of an anon, and anonymous fought back.

Jailbreaking also does have other uses.

i.e., one could jailbreak to install a distribution of linux and one could, say, hunt pedophiles.

I wonder. Could Geohot counter-sue Sony (and win)?

not likely, as legal battles are mostly a battle of $$ (civil suits in the U.S. atleast) - sony has $$, Geohot does not (relative to sony)

what exactly are the benefits of jailbreaking a device such as the ps3
apart form being able to play illegal copies of games?

what can you use a computer for besides playing games? - all of those possibilities

P.S. - if sony was going after the people who played games without buying them, that would be one thing, but they aren't - they are lumping all the people together and going after everyone, regardless if they played games on it or not - that there is the major issue

Sony are suing Geohot because he published the key which is required by games to be able to run on the PS3. For all his claims he doesn't condone piracy, releasing the one thing which would most easily enable it makes those claims ridiculously laughable.

He published a key. That doesn't sound illegal. Sounds maybe unethical but not illegal.

Mailing someone a packet of sugar doesn't sound illegal either. Weird, maybe, but still quite illegal.

Makes sense to me that publishing things that will likely cause a company to lose a significant amount of money without permission is illegal.

I don't get it. Anon is helping geohot? He's a freaking asshat. I've owned a PS3 for 5 years and I've been forced to pay 60 dollars per game. And looking back at it, legitimacy over piracy doesn't actually hurt me as much as I'd expect it to feel.

Sony isn't going to back down on a fight against piracy, and I'll actually support them on that. Anon has never actually won against anyone, and when they challenge a corporate giant like Sony, they're not going to get a reaction at all.

  • The Helper The Helper:
Actually I was just playing with having some kind of mention of the food forum and recipes on the main page to test and see if it would engage some of those people to post something. It is just weird to get so much traffic and no engagement
  • The Helper The Helper:
So what it really is me trying to implement some kind of better site navigation not change the whole theme of the site
  • Varine Varine:
How can you tell the difference between real traffic and indexing or AI generation bots?
  • The Helper The Helper:
The bots will show up as users online in the forum software but they do not show up in my stats tracking. I am sure there are bots in the stats but the way alot of the bots treat the site do not show up on the stats
  • Varine Varine:
I want to build a filtration system for my 3d printer, and that shit is so much more complicated than I thought it would be
  • Varine Varine:
Apparently ABS emits styrene particulates which can be like .2 micrometers, which idk if the VOC detectors I have can even catch that
  • Varine Varine:
Anyway I need to get some of those sensors and two air pressure sensors installed before an after the filters, which I need to figure out how to calculate the necessary pressure for and I have yet to find anything that tells me how to actually do that, just the cfm ratings
  • Varine Varine:
And then I have to set up an arduino board to read those sensors, which I also don't know very much about but I have a whole bunch of crash course things for that
  • Varine Varine:
These sensors are also a lot more than I thought they would be. Like 5 to 10 each, idk why but I assumed they would be like 2 dollars
  • Varine Varine:
Another issue I'm learning is that a lot of the air quality sensors don't work at very high ambient temperatures. I'm planning on heating this enclosure to like 60C or so, and that's the upper limit of their functionality
  • Varine Varine:
Although I don't know if I need to actually actively heat it or just let the plate and hotend bring the ambient temp to whatever it will, but even then I need to figure out an exfiltration for hot air. I think I kind of know what to do but it's still fucking confusing
  • The Helper The Helper:
Maybe you could find some of that information from AC tech - like how they detect freon and such
  • Varine Varine:
That's mostly what I've been looking at
  • Varine Varine:
I don't think I'm dealing with quite the same pressures though, at the very least its a significantly smaller system. For the time being I'm just going to put together a quick scrubby box though and hope it works good enough to not make my house toxic
  • Varine Varine:
I mean I don't use this enough to pose any significant danger I don't think, but I would still rather not be throwing styrene all over the air

I bitch about Xenforo sometimes but it really is full featured you just have to really know what you are doing to get the most out of it.
  • The Helper The Helper:
It is just not easy to fix styles and customize but it definitely can be done
  • The Helper The Helper:
I do know this - xenforo dropped the ball by not keeping the vbulletin reputation comments as a feature. The loss of the Reputation comments data when we switched to Xenforo really was the death knell for the site when it came to all the users that left. I know I missed it so much and I got way less interested in the site when that feature was gone and I run the site.
