Another Ability Question

I feel bad; this is the third ability question in an hour so. I have an ability based off of chain lightning, and it has a buff attached to it. However, the unit never gets the buff when the ability is cast. I figured the problem might be that chain lightning doesn't have a buff, but I dont't know. Any ideas?

wat u could do is have a trigger like this


event:
an ability is cast

conditions:
ability equal to (yours)

actions
add buff to unit

try that then have a trigger that says the oposite ability is cancled or somthin

last I checked you couldn't add buffs to units.

not sure what the problem is here, I would have thought the primary target at least would have gotten the buff.....

A friendly reminder to all that buffs in the World Editor mean nothing more than graphical effects plus a small icon in the status bar. Buffs don't do anything gameplay-wise.

You might already know, but it never hurts to be sure.

That's maybee becuse chain lightning has a duration = 0 (or somthing like that)?

That would do it, phyrex, good thinking. Buff lengths are based off of the ability's duration, so a duration of zero would kill the buff immediately.

Buffs do have gameplay effects. If you remove a buff before the ability duration has worn off, the effect vanishes. For example if you use ensnare on someone, that unit will not have ensnare anymore once you remove the buff.

Darg is correct; you can't add buffs to units. And I also increased the duration, but still nothing. I'll try increasing it even more and see if it does anything.

Buffs are the ART of the ability, and ensare wills till work but the Net art will vanish, not the effect. Chain Lightning doesn't have a buff in the first place, and even if you add one, a unit will not have the icon at their status even if you add it.

When the ability is cast, make a dummy unit and make the dummy unit cast a dummy spell that will add the buff to them. You'd have to base the dummy spell of of one of the preset abilities, not making a new one. SO let's say I wanted to make a dummy unit cast a custom chain lightning on a unit through triggers. Go under Chain Lightning in the Orc section and edit it's values. Then, order your unit to Orc Far Seer - Chain Lightning a unit and it will czst your custom Chain Lightning.

I'm sorry, but I still don't get it (I'm not very good with abilities ). I don't understand how if Chain Lightning won't add buffs, how making a dummy unit cast it will fix it. Do I need to make a second ability? I'm sorry for making this so much more complicated than it probably is, but I'm just not very good with abilities. *sniff*

I just wanted to add that I'm having the same problem with an ability based off of Rain of Fire. The thing that I don't understand is how to tell the dummy unit on which unit to cast the ability.

Fixed the Rain of Fire one (apparently doing damage has something to do with it); still working on the Ice Shard one.
