One of Australia's richest men, Clive Palmer, has unveiled plans for a 21st century version of the Titanic to be built in China, with its first voyage from England to New York set for 2016.

Palmer, a self-made mining billionaire, said he has commissioned state-owned Chinese company CSC Jinling Shipyard to construct Titanic II with exactly the same dimensions as its predecessor.

"It will be every bit as luxurious as the original Titanic but of course it will have state-of-the-art 21st century technology and the latest navigation and safety systems," Palmer said in a statement, released on Monday.

"Titanic II will sail in the northern hemisphere and her maiden voyage from England to North America is scheduled for late 2016.

Too soon?.. xD

OT: Cool! I mean not really much difference from any other cruiser but the name. Perhaps include history of the original Titanic in a sort of museum placed on the ship?

Maybe it'll crash on top of the first one too.

It has an build-in auto-target for ice-bergs to ensure the same experience of the first titanic.
That was alot of hyphen in that last sentence...

This is a follow-up.

Titanic II = "Made in China", and Online Reactions

A plan to make a copy of the Titanic in China has been attracting considerable attention, combining as it does the hubris of the “Titanic” name and the manufacturing quality of China.

The ship, dubbed “Titanic II,” was commissioned by billionaire Austrialian mining magnate Chris Palmer, whose recent plans include such modest enterprises as running for office and starting a luxury cruise line and resort empire.

The plan is for the Titanic II to replicate the look and feel of the original Titanic, whilst incorporating modern innovations in unsinkability and China’s low cost shipbuilding talent.

Naturally Palmer was asked about how unsinkable it would be:

“Of course it will sink if you put a hole in it. It is going to be designed so it won’t sink, but, of course, if you are superstitious like you are, you never know what could happen.”

I feel like I walked into a really immature conversation... silly helpers... o_O;;

I will say this:

The Titanic is WAY overrated. Most people don't think about it, but the tragedy saw 1514 people die in 1911. If you do the math on that, that's 101 years ago... Additionally, if you put it on a scale of death tolls from other disasters and such things... it doesn't hold much value or relevance there either. see: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_accidents_and_disasters_by_death_toll as a quick example of HUGE death tolls from other disasters. No one seems to speak of the SS Sultana... or even the PS General Slocum which sank 10 years before in New York and had 1021 casualties...

What you have left after you use your head a little is the pure value it has from the movie. I promise you, if that movie wasn't made, no one would ever talk about that ship. There are hundreads of luxury cruise ships that would probably put the Titanic to shame but what does exist is the media coverage one gets when they announce that there ship will be called "Titanic", setting it aside from the rest by the simple notoriety of the name.

Keep it in perspective people. Sure, there are certain circumstances in which the Titanic was interesting, but it really doesn't deserve the mainstream spotlight that it has imo.

I'd think that people would be scared to sail on something called "Titanic 2" as well, but I'm going to agree with Dan here on this one. :)

I'm going to build the Costa Concordia 2! Wasssup

NO I don't think it overrated at all. And It doesn't matter Big or Small disaster. Even If It's Not in the news all the time and so on.
It's the same shock we feel during any other disaster. No? And seriously, you can't compare disasters to each other. It's quite wrong to do so.

Okay, FC, you can't compare. We can.
In fact, we compare disastrous earthquakes using a logarithmic scale; maybe you can't, but we can.
We compare using death tolls and property damages along with other units of measurement, too.

And who are you kidding about the "same shock"?
If my loved ones died in an accident, I'd be pretty damn shocked.
Someone else's loved ones died; I'd hardly care unless I get negatively affected.

I don't feel the same shock for all disasters =P

It's not about any logarithmic scale and I'm not kidding.
Seriously, It sounds like "this life isn't worth anything. But OMFG Such a tragic waste of life on another human life"

Someone else's loved ones died.
 Of course you would feel like that. And it's NOT only you.
when it comes to family disasters. But that's another matter altogether.

I want to build a filtration system for my 3d printer, and that shit is so much more complicated than I thought it would be
  • Varine Varine:
Apparently ABS emits styrene particulates which can be like .2 micrometers, which idk if the VOC detectors I have can even catch that
  • Varine Varine:
Anyway I need to get some of those sensors and two air pressure sensors installed before an after the filters, which I need to figure out how to calculate the necessary pressure for and I have yet to find anything that tells me how to actually do that, just the cfm ratings
  • Varine Varine:
And then I have to set up an arduino board to read those sensors, which I also don't know very much about but I have a whole bunch of crash course things for that
  • Varine Varine:
These sensors are also a lot more than I thought they would be. Like 5 to 10 each, idk why but I assumed they would be like 2 dollars
  • Varine Varine:
Another issue I'm learning is that a lot of the air quality sensors don't work at very high ambient temperatures. I'm planning on heating this enclosure to like 60C or so, and that's the upper limit of their functionality
  • Varine Varine:
Although I don't know if I need to actually actively heat it or just let the plate and hotend bring the ambient temp to whatever it will, but even then I need to figure out an exfiltration for hot air. I think I kind of know what to do but it's still fucking confusing
  • The Helper The Helper:
Maybe you could find some of that information from AC tech - like how they detect freon and such
  • Varine Varine:
That's mostly what I've been looking at
  • Varine Varine:
I don't think I'm dealing with quite the same pressures though, at the very least its a significantly smaller system. For the time being I'm just going to put together a quick scrubby box though and hope it works good enough to not make my house toxic
  • Varine Varine:
I mean I don't use this enough to pose any significant danger I don't think, but I would still rather not be throwing styrene all over the air

  • The Helper The Helper:
I do know this - xenforo dropped the ball by not keeping the vbulletin reputation comments as a feature. The loss of the Reputation comments data when we switched to Xenforo really was the death knell for the site when it came to all the users that left. I know I missed it so much and I got way less interested in the site when that feature was gone and I run the site.
