AVI Files & Media player 9

I needed a codec to play AVI files in media player. Specifically the DX50 codec.

So I went to DIVX and got the latest DIVX driver. The avi files will play, but they LAG majorly. Everything is slow and choppy. I turned off everything in media player that automatically updates, downloads, or any type of connecting to the net. Still lags.

So I uninstalled it. I installed a generic DX50 codec from a different website (these things are hard to find)

After reboot, when you try to play the avi file, it just says

"Connecting..."

And hangs. You have to kill media player. It just hangs.

This is really, really ticking me off. The other comps took the DIVX driver JUST fine. DIVX says theres some problems with the driver and SP2, BUT THE OTHER MACHINES HAVE SP2 ANYWAY and work FINE.

Any help here? I'm stuck.

kjfhdsghg lkjfdhgsdkf!!!!!

Try playing it in RealPlayer and see if you have the same problem. I have had major problems with Media Player. The same movies that hang and lag on my Windows 2000 system play fine on my dad's XP setup.

I have switched to playing all WMV's in Winamp because Media Player will play about a second then freeze then i have to minimize and maximize then it plays again for another couple of secs then freezes.

As far as I am concerned Media Player sucks.

Okay.

Used DIVX 5.2
Doesn't play in media player.
Does play in Real Player.

Found something on the internet about compatabilities between Media Player, DIVX, and VIA chipsets.

Latest VIA 4-IN-1 is installed.

Did I ever mention that I HATE VIA, and worship the intel chipset? Seriously, I do.

I am thinking, it works here because of the intel boards, and perhaps not on the other because of the VIA. Not sure though.

So now I will use Real Player for the video files.

here's some probably useless information on installing dx50:

dx50 is fourcc code for the DivX5.xx codec - you can download the Standard (free) DivX 5.1 codec from here:

http://www.divx.com/divx/

If you had trouble installing it I would suggest that you go to control panel - add and remove programs - and see if it lists an installation
for the DivX Codec - if so I would first remove it and then try a reinstallation.

If it's not listed in add/remove programs then (only if you have had problems with a new installation) in controll panel go to 'system' then click on the hardware tab then click on device manager -- scroll down to sound, video and game controllers and click on the plus then right click on video codecs and click on properties then click on the properties tab of the box that opens and see if you have DivX.dll listed as one of the video codecs - if so then I would highlight it and click on remove --- Once that has been done then you should be able to reinstall the codec from the dl obtained from the site above.

/end copy and paste

was it gspot that told you that you needed dx50 to run the avi file? why anyone would encode stuff using divX is beyond me....
(get gpot here if you need it: http://www.free-codecs.com/download/GSpot.htm)

the most common reason why media player gives problems is that people inadvertently download more codecs than they need, and this causes a few headaches. I personally don't experience issues with WMP because I ensure that I have as few codecs installed as possible.

For alternative media players, also have a look at Media Player Classic and see if you like it or not (this software is NOT related to Microsoft Windows Media Player):

http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=82303&package_id=84358&release_id=205239

TELL me about it.

I have things working nicely now, but I had to do different codecs to get things working, installs and uninstalls.

Even though things work, I have hardcore lock up problems randomly while browsing the net or folders. Locks up all the time. Dunno how to fix it. Stressed.

Sigh. ALL these computers... and ones gotta be $&#. I'm ready to show it my drop-knee teqniques and pitch it. Heh... too bad I can't.

Dunno what to do about that problem yet.

If you don't mind the hassle of still fiddling around with things, try getting rid of divx altogether and install ffdshow instead:

http://sourceforge.net/projects/ffdshow

It's the most superior mpeg4 codec out there, and its fast, which is of course a very good thing.

Nah nah... I'm about done meddling. Too much time lost as it stands.

I compared versions of DivX on my other machines, and they have 5.1.1 light. It was really hard to find; its not on DivX website anymore. I got it through a link-of-a-link-of-a-link.

Seems to work a lot better now. A decent overall driver update has drastically improved things also. Except the video drivers that I did at the start, the guy had some drivers on there from year 2000. Heh heh.

However, my test subject, Quake III Arena, won't perform at all. It takes 5 minutes to play the intro screen, and then the menu can't display. Funny. The video card does support OpenGL, so it should play. Adjusting the opengl settings and what not did absolutely nothing... but thats for another thread, another day. LOL.

Theres just something to be said about a 16 meg video card, an AMD chipset, and an integrated gateway hunk of junk. LOL. I think its time for him to get a new one.

I am still using a 500 mhz computer with a sound blaster live value and a voodoo 3. I seriously need some upgrade action.

Hah wow, you're messing with old stuff The Helper. I work at a computer place where we get donations of 200 computers just like that :)

I find that DivX player seems to work nicely with anything you have(after you d/l certain codecs you need), and i totally agree with you that WMP is just a piece of crap. I haven't had much luck with it either.

Maybe it's a bug between SP2 and these other programs?

Today I had to scramble, I didn't work most of dinner service and no one told me shit. They had a rough few hours lol
  • Varine Varine:
I have two salmon, Sockeye and Atlantic. Atlantic is used for the kids salmon and the salmon and beet salad, and can also be added onto any dish or just as a side. Atlantic salmon will almost exclusively ever be FARMED, as it is endangered in the wild, and we ALWAYS cut them to 4 ounces.
  • Varine Varine:
SOCKEYE salmon, very different and this IS wild caught. We have an ENTREE version, and an add on version. The entree is 7 ounces, the add on is 4. Why? Because that is how someone that wasn't me set up the computer.
  • Varine Varine:
I had to have this conversation like ten fucking times tonight

The issue being, I came into work and had none of this whatsoever

So, taking into consideration that what I typed out up there is kind of some fucking nonsense that under normal circumstances no one really needs to fucking be able to explain in any rational way
  • Varine Varine:
Let alone trying to figure it out from a wildly stressed out me that is also on a phone call trying to get something to show up from Seattle tomorrow while trying to explain this salmon situation, that also is barely solved in maybe a few hours and and but I am bulking it with a few steelhead filets I have and that is a WHOLE fucking different thing to the 19 year old server that got put on day shift C crew that doesn't know who I am.

I did however really want days. I like getting off at 4 half the time, and that makes it worth it!

Once we hit winter I feel like I get to back to having a pretty cool job. Like I bitch about it all the time, but it's work. I'm still gonna bitch

All in all though I think this summer is going really well. Some complicated things, but at the end of the day it isn't THAT big of a deal. Not all of our servers have quite realized they are technically sales
  • Varine Varine:
Like yeah it is a substitute, but FOMO. Chef isn't getting this again this year, he has to figure it out, so it's slightly off on the menu, but that is more or less the LOWEST quality and price. Right now, steelhead is a real stealhear, right?
  • Varine Varine:
Like fuck off even I can do it
  • Varine Varine:
I am going to get one of my servers to do that in her server voice and you'll see my point
  • Varine Varine:
Maybe the bartender. Idk, it's one of my favorite things to hear them go from calm to customer service voice. They will translate it to like "The chef is trying to change that a bit right now so he does have a Alaskan river steelhead. Yeah like the one you might fish probably!" And then the girls can bat their eyes and do pretty girl server shit
