This is a reply from 'The Helper' on the Battle.Net site's Open Technical Forum. > lines are mine, non > is The Helper. I was seeking help in the open forum due to a problem that was supposedly fixed by Blizzard. However I still face severe latency issues:

Point taken. Do you notice this problem all the time or just during
peak hours? Post something in my forum

http://www.the-group.org/helperszone/

and MAYBE we can help get you a better connection through some high
speed internet tweaking.

[Done :) ]

Anyways, I was looking for assistance with my T1 Line. I get 866.9 Kbps (as proven by a link) which is rated as more than an ISDN. However my T1 is butchered over ANY Battle.Net gateway. I have proven it with eight traceroutes. One at peak time and one at off peak for my area. (Peak time: 6:30PM CST my time on weekdays, and I chose an off-peak time at 6:30AM CST)

Please oh great Helper. Help the MCSE in learning!

what's wrong with the traceroutes?-- I don't see anything out of the ordinary with them. It looks better than mine at parts and I don't have any serious problems.

I'm not sure what you mean by "client-to-server for long distance communications." Yes there are routers throughout various ISP's networks forwarding data back and forth (as with all net traffic) but that's about it. Longer paths on the internet are always slower.

If you are talking about Diablo 2, then it is client-server for realms. And these servers are known to be a bit slow :(

Are you behind a firewall? because that could be the problem right there... not much you can do about that

Also there is a known isse with always having high latency to games when using Windows 2000 or XP -- but as far as I know that is a Starcraft and War2BNE problem.

The fact that you have a T1 isn't a big difference in this case, because there is no way the server, or other game players in a peer-to-peer game, are sending that much data anyway.

I'm just spouting off possibilities here, not really coming to any conclusion or diagnosis ,hehe

I AM running Win2k, but it is not latency! I have SC.

My problem is connecting to the gateways, and getting into/out of games. For the time being I seem to only be able to play with people half-way around the earth.

I have problems connecting to my friend's games (five blocks away), but my friend in new zealand creates games that I can actually get into in SC.

The issue lies in the server or connection. Whatever those trace routes say (I have looked at them), they do decieve you. That 70ms may be true, but inside B.Net I have over eight seconds of lag (16 second total, half there, half back) between my friend, five blocks away... Thats over 8000 ms latency. Yet when I connect to anything via any other system than B.Net/Blizzard Game I connect with over 866.9 Kbps.

This is EXTREMELY odd, and it happened just recently. For about the past three weeks in fact I have been unable to connect without a different connection system than B.Net or by playing with NZ/Australian players. Odd as it may be, I get 1g lag joining games from them, but 6r+ joining games from others.

That and once I get inside of a game, if I do, my latency goes COMPLETELY away. Therefore it is a server issue. I do not know why, but for some reason Battle.Net is butchering my connection. And I would like to play with my friend once in a while. The fact that not many Australian/NZ people play inhibits what I can play. I can't make a game anymore, if I do not even my NZ friend can join. However I can join his just fine. And a person who lives five blocks from me cant join mine, and I cant join his.

To me that is a SERIOUS issue.

Especcially because of the T1, I doubt that my packet loss or any others could be so huge. My ping times reveal 70ms to both US gateways, 0% packet loss.

Your tracert result do not reflect lag, I use a 56K modem, and connect at 49333, I am located in the Midwest, I have 13 hops to USEAST with the typical latency delay showing 147ms, and 14 hops to USWEST with the typical latency delay showing 176ms. You are showing 20 hops to USEAST with the typical latency delay showing 32ms, and 15 hops to USWEST with the typical latency delay showing 30ms.

Here are things you should check to make sure the lag is not on you end.

From BitBasher

My D2 testing indicates that D2 can lag, and BADLY if ANYTHING in the
background is stealing CPU cycles. Our evil brother in chocolate, pbVax,
had a problem where D2 would literally pause for real time seconds (anywhere
for 3 to 20 seconds), then it would try to catch up, and everything would
run fast for a few seconds after the "lag" was over. Oh, he has 128MB of
RAM.

We tracked this down to a program, stealthfully hiding in the "run" section
of the registry, called MDM.EXE. This program (short for Machine Debug
Monitor) was installed by the development software, Microsoft VC++ 6.0.
This program hides in the background (you can't see it when you do a task
list with Alt-Ctl-Del), and from time-to-time, it needs to do something.

Here's where the problem lies. D2 almost ALWAYS uses ALL your available
system RAM. Doesn't matter if it's 64Meg, 128Meg, 256Meg; D2 will use it
all. Now, when ANY background task needs to be serviced by the CPU, Windows
has to SWAP OUT a large portion of the D2 code, then SWAP IN the offending
background program, give it a few cycles, then swap it back out, then swap
back in the swapped out D2 code (whew). This is what causes "local lag" in
D2.

We have found that if you run MSCONFIG, or any other
"what-is-running-on-my-system" software, you can probably find something
that is running that shouldn't be. Here are some examples of stuff you can
kill:
- Any anti-virus software
- Any hotsync software (for PDAs and Palms)
- APPLOG.EXE
- The scheduling manager (if you don't need scheduled tasks)
- Nuke Nabber
- Any port sniffers or listeners

In other words, when you play D2, you want to have ABSOLUTELY nothing
running that absolutely does NOT NEED TO BE THERE. It only takes a single
background task to kill D2's performance.

BB.

also some old advice from Wargasm help site but most of it still holds true....................

this is general info about lag on the bottom I added even
somemore info about lag!! if u don't know what u are doing
then don't do it . that goes for everything on this page

Lag - n. lagous supertitus

Author: Great Wolf

Everyone has experience lag one time or another, whether
it would be downloading or as more widely noticed on online
games such as Quake II. Most lag isn't that bad and we
swallow our pride and continue to play. But there are times
when it gets so bad your movements and actions don't respond
so you ultimately get "fragged" and you are left sitting
there looking at a frozen screen. Here is a list of
facts/opinions that will cause lag and help to lower it.

Definitions:

Lag - To proceed or develop with comparative slowness.
DUN - Dial up networking
ISP - Internet service provider
Bandwith - The amount a server can hold. The higher the
better.
Here is a list of high Bandwith ISP's. Please make sure of
the notes.

Earthlink www.earthlink.net ( mainly K56 Flex )
AOL www.aol.com (many busy signals)
Sprint www.sprint.net (28.8 only)
CompuServe (many busy signals) www.compuserve.com
AT&T ( Mainly X2 ) www.att.net
IBM ( X2 only ) www.ibm.com
Note: 56k is a very risky investment. Most people who use
56k modems will hardly ever see a difference from 33.6 since
56k is so sensitive to net traffic and other tiny little
bugs. Also having multiple phones or speaker phones attached
into the same line you use your modem for no matter where
they are located will keep you from getting 56k speed.

Lag is usually caused by:

A small ISP (Internet service provider) with very low
Bandwith. Mostly you wont get lag just a very high ping.
Downloading off the Internet and playing online at the same
time.
If you have 56k and your modem type of 56k isn't compatible
with your ISP's form of 56k you will suffer severely from
lag especially with K56 Flex since there are two types,
Rockwell and Lucent.
Lag is also caused by a server that cannot handle that many
players. For example, if you are running on a 133mhz
Pentium with a 33.6 modem don't expect anyone who plays
online off your server to get under a 500 ping.
Finally you will get lag if you are running any other type
of online programs such as ICQ, AOL's IM's, People Link,
etc...
What can you do to solve your lag problems? Well, here are
some tips to follow for setting up your modem connection.
(This mainly pertains to 33.6 and 56k users). Follow these
steps carefully:

Modem Setup

Goto your modems control panel.
Under the General tab set your modems speed to 112500 for
x2/56k/v90 and 57600 for 28.8/33.6
Next goto the options tab and make sure your data bits are
set at 8, no parity, 1 stop bit.
Then goto "port settings" and make sure your FIFO buffers
are set to full (all the way to the right).
Select the "advanced" option and be sure to have error
control, compression and flow control set on "hardware"
Then make sure if you have the correct init string set. If
you don't know if you need one or not check out www.56k.com
or www.x2.com
Now select "OK" until you are out of the modem properties.
COM Port SetUp

Goto the "system" control panel and select the "Device
Manager" tab.
Then select COM and LPT and then goto your COM port used by
your modem, properties.
Follow the same steps as show in the first section "Modem
Setup"
COM Port SetUP (Alternate method if not shown on you device
manager tab)

Select Run from the start menu and type SYSEDIT and select
OK
You will see a bunch on window pop up and from here got the
window labeled WIN.INI
Select 'Find', under 'Search' option, in the SYSEDIT menu
bar, type "ports" and select Next.
Under the 'Ports' section, locate the COM port that
corresponds to your modem and change the values to the
following: COMx:=115200,n,8,1,p (For x2/v.90 modems.)
COMx:=57600,n,8,1,p (For 28.8/33.6k modems.)
(Replace 'x' with the COM port number you wrote down
earlier.)
Select 'Save' from the SYSEDIT 'File' menu.
Select 'Exit' from the SYSEDIT 'File' Menu.
Dial-Up Networking Settings (DUN)

Open the DUN folder and select your ISP you dial into by
right clicking on it and selecting properties.
Under the "General" tab, unmark the use area code and
dialing properties box.
Next under the "server types" tab unmark the "log onto
network", "enable software compression", "net BEUI" and
"IPX/SPX compatible" and select OK.
Network settings

Select the 'Network' control panel.
Select the properties for the 'Dial-Up Adapter'.
Under the 'Bindings' tab, only TCP/IP should be marked,
unmark everything else.
Under the 'Advanced' tab, click on the Property 'Use IPX
header compression' and change its Value to 'No'.
Then select OK to exit the 'Dial-Up Adapter' properties.
Next select the properties for 'TCP/IP'
Under the 'Bindings' tab, make sure everything is unmarked
Under the 'WINS Configuration' tab select 'Disable WINS
Resolution'.
Under the 'DNS Configuration' tab select 'Disable DNS'.
Under the 'IP Address' tab, select 'Obtain an IP Address
Automatically', if your ISP supports the function.
Select OK to exit from the 'TCP/IP' properties.
Select OK to exit from the 'Network' control panel.
Other settings

Here is a list of files that will help from very little to
significantly. All can be obtained at
http://www.microsoft.com/windows95/info/updates.htm

Universal Serial BUS Update ( very little )
DUN 1.2b- This will lower your ping by 20ms on 56k modes
and 30-50ms on 28.8/33.6 modems.
Winsock 2- This update will give you about 10ms on 56k
modems and 20-30ms on 28.8/33.6.
IP update will help with all those security holes
TCP update will give a more robust connection.
Disclaimer
Although I use these myself, I hold no responsibility if
something goes awry and explodes. But what are the odds of
that? :) some more info bout lag and battlenet... lag is not
necessarily a function of your connection, or anyone else's
connection. Lag can occur on someone with a cable modem or
T-1 just as easily as someone on a dial-up connection.
Lag/latency occurs at the weakest link in the portions of
the network between each player and their destination. On
battle.net, in the chat rooms, this is just to the
particular battle.net server they're logged into (And the
latency displayed in chat reflects only that). In the game
join screen, and in games themselves, it's from each player,
to every other player in the game. Each player also,
independently, maintains a connection to their particular
battle.net server, but very little data is sent/received
over that, generally just enough to keep it alive, and
occasionally messages. Lag can occur in a game when any
single portion of a person's link, which is comprised of
generally 15-20 hops (10 hops or less is a fantastically low
number of links along a route on the modern Internet. 15-20
is typical, and 30 is kind of bad, but unfortunately, not
too uncommon), has problems and slows things down. A single
router or relay somewhere along the network link having a
bad day can cause increased latency (lag) in a connection.
Call an average game 4 people, and say for argument's sake
that each has a 15 hop traceroute to each other, that's 60
or more things that all have to be working right to have a
good, fast game connection. Contrary to misinformed popular
belief, Modem speed has very little to do with lag/latency
on battle.net/Starcraft. Throughput is the issue here, not
(generally) connection speed. And throughput is more a
matter of your ISP and the various portions of Internet
backbones and network links from you to the other players in
a game. A bad link somewhere in Sprintlink or UUNet can
happen to a player on a network to a T-1 just as easily as
it can to a dial up user. Now, in general, yes higher speed
connections tend towards less lag overall, but that is more
a function of a person's ISP, and a different ISP can make a
world of difference (and it's not necessarily a fault of a
single ISP - things for a particular ISP may vary as well. I
have two different ISPs, with different backbone providers,
and switch to the other if one is being icky, with good
results). On modems: anything from a 28.8kbps modem is
sufficient for battle.net, providing you have a decent ISP.
I play non-laggy games over my 56k x2/v.90 modem all the
time, which I get 26.4 or 28.8 connections, and extremely
rarely anything faster (31.2) due to the crappy phone lines
in my area. 56k modems (which never connect faster than 53k
anyway) are not 56k both directions. They're up to 53k
(digital encoding) on your inbound channel, and up to 32k on
your outbound channel (which uses standard
modulation/demodulation). Now, the more important one here
in regards to games is your outbound channel - which is up
to 32k - no faster than the 33.6 users out there. Other
things which you should look out for as regards lag/latency,
is playing people from other countries/continents.
Battle.net splits the channels in which people login to up
to different countries/regions not only for
cultural/language reasons, but also because, generally,
people from Australia playing other people from Australia
usually don't lag as much as people from Australia playing
people from Canada. Now, I've successfully played with
people from other continents relatively lag free . . . but
it's hit or miss. It tends to be fine, or terrible.

First...the info is great! Will apply what I haven't
already. I do have a problem with the 56k Flex comment
though. 56k Flex was just approved as the standard for Major
Modem manufactures in December 1997, This includes 3COM
(U.S. Robotics) and K56flex, backed by Rockwell
International and Lucent Technologies. The "X2" technology
modems (US robt) will be the modems in danger of failing and
falling speeds. Flex on the other hand...will improve with
the new standard.

Revenge wrote some more

On the Lag subject. Might want to mention NOT to change the
TCP/IP IP ADDRESS if you are running Wingate. This would
cancel the access to the Internet. Also, as a precaution,
tell them to write down all the changed info. This just
happened to me. I know that I can't play games but...maybe
there is someone out there that is going to apply this just
to enhance any performance they can get. Also, the Fifo
buffers will cause a communication error when play
modem/modem games and you have to reduce the settings. I
have mine maxed on all machines but...have in the past had
to reduce the settings.

Databank: Killing Lag

Remember only you can prevent lag Lag is the plague of
online gaming.

Some people can tolerate it most people can't. Lag can take
the fun right out of a game and make it an exercise in
frustration. What is lag?

------------------------------------------------------------
--------------------
Lag is the time it takes for you to issue you a command in a
game [ex. moving unit A to point B] and the time it takes
for that command to take place. If you order [for example] a
templar to move across the map and he just sits there for 20
seconds then begins his journey you have a lot of lag.
What causes lag?

------------------------------------------------------------
--------------------
The Internet is not exactly fast... when you send
information as well as receive it you may not be able to
receive or send all the information fast enough and this
produces lag. This is why users should not even attempt to
play a serious game online with anything less than a 28.8
modem. The faster your modem is the better. There are other
factors as well. Such as how far you are from the other
players or servers. If you are playing from Japan and the
servers and the other players on in the states you can bet
the game will be unplayable. Another factor is packet loss.
Packets are used to send data/information over the Internet.
These packets contain all the information necessary for the
online game to function. When playing online you are
constantly sending and receiving packets. Because the
Internet is glitchy and far from perfect, you may lose
packets, this also contributes to lag. There is another less
common factor and this is a slow PC if you are playing a
game that runs very slow on your computer this can also
create lag and your pretty much stuck unless you upgrade.
How do I stop lag?

------------------------------------------------------------
--------------------
There are several ways to stop lag. I will name the best and
most effective ways here. First get a good modem. A 28.8
will do but a 33.6 or a 56.6 [if your ISP supports it] is
even better.
These will help insure you have a fast connection. Then
there is your ISP (Internet service provider), this is the
server you connect to when you use the Internet. If you have
a crappy server you will often lag as well. The server may
be over-burdened by too many users for its capabilities.

If you can shop around and find the fastest ISP in your
area. There are also other ways to increase your speed
online and reduce lag

What can I do on my PC to improve my speed and decrease lag?

------------------------------------------------------------
--------------------
First off there is a general rule for all you modem users.
Close everything!! (like icq) Do not leave any other
programs running [unless you have a top-of-the-line machine]
and always close any programs that use online resources
[example: ICQ, Netscape, MSIE, FTP].
These will take that valuable speed away from your games. It
just doesn't work if you try to download a file and play a
game at the same time. Even ICQ is a criminal always go
offline before playing a game. When someone sends a message
it can really do some damage. So close everything.

For us win95 users there is something we can do to make our
connection even more efficient. The connection program used
by windows95 is meant for LANs and not for the Internet.
This means that packets sent and received are 1500 bytes by
default.

The Internet standard is around 520. You can really make
your connection smoother by reducing the size of these
packets. First off get if you don't get what I'm talking
about visit this page http://www.sysopt.com/maxmtu.html and
http://www.sysopt.com/maxmtu.html , then finish reading
this.

Here are some basic instructions for using this program.
This is what the program looks like. What you want to do is
click on optimum settings.

Then click on update registry to save the changes you have
made.

The program automatically sets your packet size to about 560
or something like that. I find that this makes your
connection very smooth.. but a bit inefficient.

I like to make the packet size larger. Try the default first
maybe it is right for you. If it isn't go to change maxMTU
speed and enter a packet size.. remember the lowest is 520
and the windows95 default is 1500, you will most likely want
something in-between [after making changes click on update
registry].

If at anytime you want to go back to your original settings
click on basic settings then update registry.

Yep anything in the channels is server-related.

The bug that SC has with Win2k *gives it the appearance* of having high latency to almost all games. Blizzard is supposedly working on it. But that doesn't explain problems connecting to the server in the first place...

did you try a traceroute to your friend's IP address?

--

also try this:

telnet to useast.battle.net on port 6112

Start --> Run--> telnet useast.battle.net 6112 (sorry if you know how to use telnet... I don't know how far along you are in your MCSE training)

try the other gateways too

are you able to connect quickly? (send a lowercase 'c' and it should prompt you for login info)

US East, Asia, and Europe are all non-available to me. The 'appearence' is a lie. It IS high lag, and I rarely, if ever, get into a game. However if I do at some period in time, they all tell me 1g, I tell em I got a T1. And my download is exceptionally fast. Because I have 0 packet loss, I will try the higher packet size. I don't know B.Nets packet limit (because I am sure I could shove a ton of 1500 size packets down B.Net's throat and choke up the whole system with little problem) so I will have to do some checking. Thanks for all this info!

The packet size increase did nothing to help. I get <10 ms lag to my friend's house. There is no way it is his problem. The 'appearence' as I say again is a lie told by Blizz. This is in no way just appearing laggy, it IS laggy.

I have no idea what my problem is, but wow it is huge.

The Windows 2000 problem has been confirmed by many people. I don't know if that's your problem, but it is a real bug. (It works fine with Windows 98 on the same computer for those people).

You will not flood battle.net with a T1...my cable modem is faster than your T1 (for downstream anyway and the upstream isn't too far off).

Having a T1 does not matter--- your latency is a function of the routers between you and your destination. T1 means you have a (maximum) 1.5megabits per second connection to your ISP's backbone. Once you get there, it depends how fast each hop is in getting to the next hop. However the tracert seems to indicate normal latency between routers. (I think we've covered that.)

Are you behind a firewall of some sort?

you mean your computer is wide open to the internet ???
no firewall , no router ??

Firewall is turned off and I reroute my comp past it for only SC. I know all the things SC has and does with all the ports and such, and Port 6112 IS open. It isn't completely open to the internet, I have two firewall comps and a server above my head.

Don't worry, I dont leave my computer open and defenseless. That is quite decieving. However for SC play I enable a set of options (in which I had to recently allow 6112 Port, but that still doesn't fix the US East Port 6112 UDP file error).

Luckily I live in an age with electricity so it's way fucking faster, but when I was just a boy trying to find my place I had some hardcore chefs that made use do things like that by hand. It is WAY easier to get right by hand because you control it and can feel it, but it takes soooooo much longer. And on the scale a modern kitchen requires... I serve 400-500 guests on average per day right now, if I had 100 then we could do things way better
  • Varine Varine:
But we can't do that. In the winter yeah, but I HAVE to get people through here right now so I can afford the staff that we CAN do that. We have about 100 days of summer, and if that summer doesn't make us what it will, then I can't operate the other most of the year with my staff. The owner is talking about closing two days a week to cut down on labor, I told him he should cut down on vacations and it did not go great. I do think I won though, I have to keep my fucking core staff and they have to be gainfully employed
  • Varine Varine:
Sure some of them might take a second job, but I can't just cut my entire staff to unlivable hours, nor can I can cut them off all winter if I want them to come back.
  • Varine Varine:
And also, there is no fucking way I'm pulling these hours come september. I only do this right now because I have to, the second I don't have to be the one doing it I won't be
  • Varine Varine:
I have a 5 person core staff in the kitchen, not including me or Chef Ben
  • Varine Varine:
Though two of those people are likely not making it this year. One of them has been replaced, the other I am kind of trying to. He's being a giant bitch, today I had to get onto him because in the three hours before I left he had taken like thirty minutes for cigarette breaks
  • Varine Varine:
And he was also complaining to me the other day that he was out of weed so couldn't smoke any before work that day, and was confused about why I was annoyed he was telling me, his boss, that he is smoking weed everyday before work.

  • Varine Varine:
Like yeah I can tell. I don't need to fucking know.
  • Varine Varine:
So now he's getting scrutinized and will not be top of the list. I know I don't have the smartest people but I do expect them to have some common fucking sense
  • Varine Varine:
I did do a rare thing for me and hire a girl last month without warning. Everyone was made at me because I started her at like 21, but she worked with me before and I was like don't care. She made 19 at her old job and I wanted her to come work with me, she is the best
    +1
  • Varine Varine:
I'm going to get her a raise at the end of the summer. She wants to go to school again, but I want her to still work with me so.... she kind of can just tell me what the price is. I can go to 25 if she keeps up. I need to get her onto line more, that's what she wants, but I need her where she is and it's not fair that she doesn't get the little bit of raise that comes with it. She can do it no problem, I've worked with her there.
  • Varine Varine:
It's just hard to move and train people unnecessarily right now. And also the line fucking sucks, it's not any more fun. This is turn and burn so I have the bankroll, and everyone suffers for it
  • Varine Varine:
Eventually we'll get it balanced, we'
  • Varine Varine:
we're starting online orders and stuff, but I also turn that off all the time because I barely keep up trying to be the best at Sysco shit
  • Varine Varine:
I think it's gonna be a good fall and winter though. We're going to have a good staff, they will get along, they will be able to manage the workload and the complications, they know how to really cook this year, like every person on line knows their steak temps. Some of them use thermometers a lot and they don't always use them right, but they do know how to do it. Failure, especially in this field, is the only way to get better. They'll get it
  • Varine Varine:
They won't get feel down while they do the thermometer, but we didn't have an instant read probe when I was learning. Like they did but god knows how off it is, you HAD to do it by feel. Even if the chef was fine with me bringing my own, it takes too long. Poke and know

I recently had an experience with a waiter that really brought down @Varine's point about them being in sales. The first waiter just asked "anything else? deserts?" and when the table shook their head said "ok" and left. Then the other waiter came in and started going off describing the deserts and you could see the heads turning, and they finally got a bunch of deserts
  • jonas jonas:
makes sense if you consider that the tip is basically a commission on sales
