It depends on the genre you'd like to listen to.

What about Eurobeat (Initial D) or various songs by TWO-MIX (Gundam series, Detective Conan, ...), Yoko Takahashi (Neon Genesis Evangelion opening theme, ...).

I bet both.

I really like the .hack series soundtracks. Especially the G.U. games but they're games, not animes.

In terms of background music, I'd say some great ones are Eureka Seven, FMA, Naruto, Rurouni Kenshin, and a few from DN. In terms of themes, I'd say Elfen Lied, FMA, Naruto, and Bleach.

If people want, I can recommend individual songs from any of the above. So many exceptional ones.
