Blue screen with playing DVD

Once i insert my DVD, i get a blue screen. My friend tells me i need some codecs but i dont where to find these requried codecs. Does anyone have this problem before?

I tried a lot of media players but none will work and my DVD player is new.

is the blue screen the entire screen? just the movie players screen? and is there any writing on the screen?

I dislike WMP (Windows media player) and I use a program called vlc media player to play DVDs. This is downloadable from www.videolan.org and it is freeware. I have encountered very few files it cannot play.

If you goto Tools->Options (assuming you have at least WMP 9, don't get 10 by the way) and then goto the Player tab, you should see a setting labeled "Download codecs automatically". Make sure that is checked. The bsod can be caused by any number of errors, and your friend might be wrong. If it is pirated material, it might not have been burned correctly, not that I am condoning piracy or anything Perish the thought.

All else failing, I'd just not use Windows Media Player. If it does this with multiple DVDs, you might not have the decoder installed (I'm pretty sure it is locked in the retail version that ships with Windows XP). There are many programs available from the Internet, some of them free, that will play DVDs.
