BNet via D2 won't connect, bncache funky?

Hi all,

I reloaded Diablo 2 (with the expansion) for fun, but I can't connect to battlenet. My error message states, "Unable to connect to battlenet, if using a modem, you may need to connect to your ISP..." I've tried deleting the bncache file or making it read only, but neither have helped. I've also tried the instructions found here: http://www.blizzard.com/support/?id=aInformation0633p1 and here: http://faqs.thehelper.net/battlenet.php#firewall to no avail. I also tried using some program I found online named bncache to remove my registry files for me.

Now to the weird part-- my bncache program has been designated as a DSMLink datalog. What the hell? DSMLink is another program I've since taken off my comp (used for tuning cars). Should I change how this file is recognized (and how do I do that), or is this not the problem? If not, what is?

The file reads:
"bncache
DSMLink datalog
0 KB"

My comp is a P4 with an ATI Radeon video card running Windows XP. I'm not terribly internet/computer savvy, and gracious for any help. Thanks in advance.

Dont worry about your bncache.dat file being associated with another program, that is not a problem. The game uses bncache.dat outside of windows so that association is not a factor here.

More than likely you are behind a firewall and you don't have your ports configured correctly. Keep going on the Blizzard support page you posted, they have a number of other steps you can go through but you want to be looking for how to configure your game to work through a firewall and not worry about bncache.dat as that is not likely your problem.
