Cannot restore saved games

I have a problem with Diablo II. This is not related to any of the online gaming. I need to reformat my hard drive. Every time (twice) I have done this in the past, I have backed up my Diablo II saved games folder. After reformatting, and installing Diablo II, I restore my saved games, to the saved games folder. But when I try to play, the characters are gone. Looking at the saved games folder shows the files are there. I am not sure what I am doing wrong, and so far Blizzard tech support has not been able to help. It seems it's unrelated to hardware, or OS, since I have done this on 2 different computers, with Win98, and WinXP. In other words I think it's operator error. If anyone has any ideas, it would be greatly appreciated.

You need to install the patch associated with those characters. What version were you running before formatting your hard-disk ?

I was running it straight off the CD with no additional patches installed. I believe it is v1.07. Also, my bad, but it is actually Diablo II: Lords of Destruction. But I think the procedure would probably be the same for both games.

Are you sure you never connected to Battle.net ? Doing so would have installed the latest patch. (1.09D)

Yeah, I'm positive. No online gaming here. I did read that after doing a fresh install, you can create your characters, using the same name, class, etc. Then copy your backed up files into the saved game directory, and that would work. Not sure if this is accurate, or not. I guess another question would be - How do I check to see if, and what version of a patch is installed.

Yeah google does not filter those bots. I remember when Apex was doing Google ads I saw the same IPs in there as I was seeing here - google is totally tracking all those bots as traffic and most google traffic, at least ours, was all bots

Weekend went by too fast. Next weekend I am going to try to do a nature thing - buddy of mine lives by the Colorado river and has some kayaks and invited me to do some kayaking from a place he knows to get on the river.
  • Ghan Ghan:
    That sounds like an adventure.

400 users all online all looking at latest content
  • The Helper The Helper:
I wonder how all these bots that sit on the lastest content page get passed anubis or maybe they did not but they are just registering on whos online
  • The Helper The Helper:
showing up on whos online not registration
  • Ghan Ghan:
The first gate is stopping all the bots that don't execute javascript.
  • Ghan Ghan:
That's the main thing with Anubis - no Javascript, no site. Typically you can still get the site to load without Javascript.
  • The Helper The Helper:
I remember the whole javascript thing, question - how many real people disable that?
  • The Helper The Helper:
Hell I guess I could go back on the stats to know that - we probably capture that and we know the before and after
  • Ghan Ghan:
Real users can't really disable Javascript anymore these days.
  • Ghan Ghan:
The internet is broken without it.
  • Ghan Ghan:
    Bot readable, not human usable.
  • The Helper The Helper:
    got it
