can't connect

I can connect to yahoo, ¾ of the websites I visit, the websites I usually cant see have some kind of ads iframe or something, then some internet optimizer pops up. I can't connect to ICQ anymore, winamp and iTUNES radio, any file sharing progs, and that's about it for now. I HAD a router, but connect directly to my modem now, which is cable, and I use winXP. I don't know if it's because my computer is configured for a router or what. I'm not the brightest girl, but I'm not TOO stupid. any ideas greatly appreciated ^_^ OH i cant find the disc that came with my router if that matters.

Sounds like you're missing the DNS settings for your connection. In WinXP:
click on Start,
right-click on My Network Places,
click on Properties,
right-click on the LAN or High-Speed Internet connection that say Enabled instead of Cable Unplugged or Disabled,
click on Properties,
click on Internet Protocol (TCP/IP),
click on Properties,
click the little dot beside "Use the following DNS server addresses:",
click the box to the right of "Preferred DNS server:",
type "151.164.1.8",
click the box to the right of "Alternate DNS server:",
type "151.164.11.201",
click on OK,
click on OK,
click on Close (X)

Try the internet now.

well, that didnt work i probably messed something else up trying to fix it. that's the story of my life. and i cant reformat. any other ideas? thanks ^_^

Most of the time I am helping people locally with similar problems, I just use the XP network setup wizard.

If your connecting to your cable modem via lan card (you used to have a router), it really does do a decent job at fixing problems.

My Network Places -> Set up a home or small office network.

id say its somekind of software problem. I would try a different web browser to start, try firefox from www.mozilla.com . Other wise you have some odd ball problem and its gonna be quicker and easier to just format and reinstall windows. Backup any data first of course.

i dont care so much about the websites opening, i just want my internet radio to work and icq. nothing is working and i dont have the disc for my router. but it should be on my computer, whatever i need right? if anyone has the patience to walk me thru this, my yahoo is miss_trisch
